A friend has a 30-40 Krag with a real rough bore and is wondering if it could be relined to 30-40 Krag. I told him I didn't think it was possible and told him to have it rebored to 35 Krag, but he is stuck on keeping it the original caliber and is unwilling to re-barrel.

I have seena Winchester 95 with shot out barrels relined back to 30 Army (30-40). I don't know how it works, but it has been done.

Most smiths don't recommend lining a barrel for a high pressure (smokeless) cartridge. I think the CMP has repro Krag barrels for sale; I realize he doesn't want to rebarrel, but he may not have a choice if he wants to shoot it.

I have no problems with relining a Krag barrel. Also can make up a new barrel for one. Who ever you have work on it make sure they have an action wrench that will not crush the action.

There was a fellow posts here that had a carbine relined recently. Me, I'd just buy a CMP barrel, they sell them for rifles and carbines both, made by Criterion. Unless it was a really collectable piece, like an original model 1892 rifle or an 1896 carbine, I'd go with rebarreling vs relining.
