I have a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .454 Casull. It is the one with the 2.58" barrel. I am planning on working up a light load using Hodgdon's Trail Boss and a cast bullet with goals of the velocity being from 950 FPS - 1,000 FPS.

At this point in time, I am planning on using the Lee 454-255-RF bullet. It weighs 260 grain using the wheel weights that I have. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=775664

I would like to use this combination for the general deep woods use here in the Southeast.

Question:
Is this a good bullet to use for this purpose out of the short-barrel .454 Casull?

Thanks

Sure it is. I have a 4" Redhawk 45LC that likes that boolit. I use Unique or 700X to get 950-1000FPS, but I expect Trailboss will get you there, too.
Make up lots, they're fun to shoot!:Fire:

I have a super redhawk with the 7.5" barrel and I like shooting 25grs of 2400 with that bullet.

2.58 " barrel does anyone ever mistake that thing for a flame thrower?

That should be a good bullet choice for what you want I am wondering if you will get bad leading at that velocity ?

Southern Shooter,

I also have that mold, and had thoughts on using it the same way in my Raging Bull, something along the order of a 45 Colt load using the standard 454 brass. I just this past weekend shot some of the Lee 300rgRFGC through it. Albeit a bit more steam behind them, they shot well and no leading other than two light smears during the first cylinder full. I have some tweeking to do and accuracy testing with them but I think they will work out great for hunting rounds.

Using TB with the 255's was my exact thoughts aslo, and hopefully this weekend I am going to get some loaded up to try out. I am going to give them a whirl with the 45/45/10 LLA lube mix first and go from there. Keep me posted on your results.

I also have that bullet, loaded in 454 casings try Tightgroup 8.0 @ 980 fps , 9.0 @ 1,100 fps ! use FEDERAL small pistol primers.
I also use the same powder charge with a MM 260 gr lfn and a MM 275 gr tc ,every bullet is accurate with the powder charges above . in 3 different guns

Test fire over a large sheet of white paper or drop cloth see if too much of that TrailBoss is just being spat out that short barrel unburned. I use it in a detective special .38, but that is a whole lot less powder.

Good morning
A 2.58" .454 ?? I agree with Firefly1957... if you missed with a full power shot you could fry them on the hoof. I have shot many of those Lee´s in my 45 Colt RBHs slow & fast and they work nicely. I bought a .454 BFR some time back and look to use that boolit for a plinker and light weight hunter load. But will most likely use Unique & 2400 as I have lots of those two powders.

I sue that boolit in my 16" puma 454 and it is SCARY accurate, and SD is in the single digits with TB. If you are looking for 1000fps, you might want to start with unique. My 16" barrel only chrono's at 1100 on the nose with the 255 and TB.

This is one of my favorite .45 boolits. It is accurate in everything I have tried it in.

Well, I recently built my boolits using the Lee 452-255-RF, Trail Boss, and small rifle primers. Using WW the boolits are casting at about 260-262 grains. I am applying Moly Lube by finger...scraping off some and working it into the grease grooves...I know, I am cheap. I started off at 9.6 grains of Trail Boss with a firm crimp using a Lee Factory Crimp die.

Backed off 10 yards from the target and easily put all of the boolets in the intended area. And, talk about and easy shooting round from the 2.58" barreled Ruger SRH Alaskan. I could shoot this all day. And, as of yet, no leading.

Soooooooo...I upped the charge to 10.0 grains even (that is all you can get in there). Sweeeeeet.

This is a fun combo to shoot. I think this round has made my big, bulky, and as my best friend calls it..."clown gun"...my favorite gun to shoot.

Thanks
