Might someone please suggest a possible source for the heavy gauge piano wire that Corbin uses for the ejector pins in some of thier swage dies?

McMaster- carr used to be a source -- but not a cheap source -
Usually a machine shop supply will have it.

Good point about drill rod -- Music wire can be reluctant to straighten out. I presume it all comes coiled, though I have never used any larger than about .030 --

Gang,

Anybody thought about a local piano store that works on pianos? I bet they would have piano wire.....

The wire I get at the hobby shop, is actually called music wire, and comes in about 36" length. It is definitely straight, as it is some hard stuff. Some oxyacetylene welding rod also matches the hardness, but it isn't easy to come by in varied sizes.

msc has straight nitride ejector pins, I dont know if the size is right but they might work. Coleman

If I recall correctly, I bought some piano wire at the ACE hardware store down the street. I bought it in two different diameters.

At the time, I wasn't looking for any specific diameter; I just needed some thin strong wire to act as a cross pin so I don't know if they'd carry the dimensions you're looking for.

I've used Brownells replacement pins for their replaceable pin punch set. The pins are 2" or 2 1/2" long and come in .039, .060 and .091 diameters and come in packages of six. I'm sure you can by die ejection pins from the different machinist supply houses cheaper, but you might have to buy a larger quantity.

Hobby shops carry piano wire in 30" long, straight pieces of various diameters, I use it to make pins, springs and as welding wire.

Hobby shops also carry brass tubing of various diameters that I find useful for making different things like primer tubes.

Graingers carries some different sizes of music wire but some of it you do have to buy a bulk spool most run about $65 or so

I bought out all the music wire that a 'music store' had when they went out of business. CHeap. (But that was many decades ago.)

SO, go down to your local GOOD music store (where they repair instruments) and find out what their sources are. (Likely to be a bit different from the machine-tool&die sources we're used to.)

Unless you can get the music wire in the exact size, you'll be better off with drill rod. Music wire is very hard to machine with a lathe. If you want pins that are EXACT size, I'd suggest you buy gage pins from www.gageshop.com The "low grade" ones are only $2.50 apiece. They'd have to be cut to length with an abrasive wheel, (they're hard), but the diameter fit will be dead on.

Great Hobbies in Edmonton Alberta. No one cheaper. I used many different sizes while making custom steelhead hooks. 3' length typically $1.50
