made it to the range today after work

tested 2 loads this evening both plinkers , just a way to get more shooting time with a rifle that doesn't see much use

a beautiful end of June evening in Wisconsin steady breeze on my back enough to keep the mosquitoes at bay 87 degrees but not to humid , just a nice night to be out

even better i had 2 loads to test

first was 14.7 gr h4895 in federal brass with cci primers and my c309-170rf as cast .310 air cooled wheel weight with a little tin sodier added, 2 coats alox with a finger coating of 50-50 alox bees wax to fill the grooves no gas checks

test rifle 30-30 336 marlin 20 inch barrel iron sights

7 fired at 25 yards 5 touching 2 not far off , probably me and the box holding my target blew over twice

tried 3 at 100 yards only got 1 on paper it was low and right and maybe starting to tumble oh well with 22 like recoil from a 30-30 no complaints

second was 17.8 gr h4895 with 15 gr of grits for filler same boolet and lube as above no checks .
this had more recoil and report but still very mild recoil fired 5 ,target had 3 touching and 2 more not to far off at 25 yards

no leading that i can see i ran a few patches didn't see anything unusual
i do believe i am hooked

after that the kids had to have their fun and blast a gas station big buddy drink cup with 22s

Sounds like fun.

I've been watching your prior thread as I'm also working on a 30-30.

14 grs is really light for 4895. Fortunatly, 4895 is more flexable about loading than many powders.

For loads in that velocity range, you might consider faster powders such as unique / herco / 2400. no fillers required.

I'm getting fair / good plinker fun loads with unique and herco with 311041gc, but not quite as good as I think this rifle should do.

At some point I'm going to pick up some 2400 to try.

I've only had a couple of range sessions with this rifle, and haven't found the sweet spot yet
I've used IMR4895 at about 28 grs for closer to factory velocities.

it's almost 15 gr 14.7 is were the measure dropped so i went with it that was a 1.09 lee auto disk that book said should drop at 15 , but they are always a few 1/10s lower with un-settled powder for me

17.7 was 2 lee .7cc scoops , then 2 .7cc scoops of grits , i felt like i shouldn't try to go to fast pushing right on the base of the boolit

hard to tell if the grits did much to help the burn i would have to test 14.7 with grits vs 14.7 without to see if i could tell a difference.

i may also need to scope the rifle before i can see well enough to know the difference between my shooting and differences in the load

interestingly 14.7 vs 17.7 had distinctly different points of impact the center of the 17.7 and grits load was nearly 2 inches away 45 degrees low and right of the lighter load , my test group was far to small to know if this was me or the load.

i went with the h4895 because the lee book has a large range of reduced loads in it for h4895 and as much as a one powder for everything isn't ideal it works better in a tight budget and it will fill most of my needs for rifle powder i am using power pistol for my pistol rounds , but none of them are cast , yet.

tested another load last night

21 gr H4895 with 10gr of grits

and my .310 as cast Lee c309-170rf tumbled with lee alox 2 coats then lee 50/50 nra lube to fill the grooved applied with a finger

this shot same POA as factory at 25 yards , not touching like the previous light loads but still decent i had 5 rounds inside the 10 ring of a 100 yard small bore target just not touching and it may well have been me , i may need to put a scope on this rifle to get better tests , i just don't see well enough with the iron sights and my eyes since i started needing glasses.

definitely more recoil the book puts it in the 1500 fps range

still no leading
