It is a 169gr spitzer gas checked design of older style. I'll see if I can attach a picture.

Its had some history of controversy in performance. If driven at moderate velocity it can perform well, but if you jack it up significantly higher it can and usually does-- not do so well. Quite a bit has been written on it so search around a bit. Other users will probably give you pointers for being happy with it. LLS

And I believe the 'u' suffix indicates an undersized mold. I may be wrong, but if it IS undersized, I foresee grief...

Nothing wrong with the mould. Search for one of the posts by Ben. .308/30-06. Fine as long as you don't hotrod it.

The U was first introduced when some shooters wanted to size their boolits as little as possible. At first U meant casting nearer to .310 or .309 rather than .312 or .313. In later years it could meany any diameter that you got from a worn cherry.

Bill,

Yes, I was fortunate to obtain one that will cast nice round bullets at .3105 "

My own U-311413 mold is a great mold for my .30 cal. needs. I size the .3105" bullets to .3095" and .310" depending on the particular rifle, and sizing is a breeze, requires very little effort.

Mine does not have the "U". Before I read that you could not push it fast I shot it in a Garand. Castof babbit alloy and heat treated to 30ish bhn shot well at 2200fps. I need to work with it again and see what my M1A NM will do with it. So many .30's so little energy!

There are many detractors who knock this design, but in my experience it shoots just fine provided you accept the fact that it ain't a 3000 fps candidate. It shoots very well in my Savage 325 30-30 and is quite good in my 30-40 Winchester 1895 as well. Both do very well loaded to around 2000 fps over a relatively slow powder, WW 748 for the 30-30 and IMR 4350 in the 30-40. I have used it in my old Springfield30-06, but it is not the best choice there. It is a much better bullet than the 311-329, though. At least in my experience, it groups half the size.
