anyone using Unique or 2400 for this caliber and cast ? I have the Lyman 280473 mold running pretty good.

I saw several posts with guys using these powders but I cannot find any documentation for it.

I suspect it was in a article from Handloader Magazine. I've never been a subscriber, but do have some of the CD sets of PDF articles on bullet casting.

I thought about Handloader right after I posted!

How was the accuracy with those fast powder loads? I will probably try the Unique and 2400 since I already use both for pistol reloading anyway. Thanks.

I haven't done a lot of work with them. Most of my past load development work was with RCBS 270-150-SP and slower powders at higher velocities and even that hasn't been high on my priority list the last couple of years.

I have run

Red Dot, in the range of 11.0 -13.0gr under the RCBS 270-150-SP. (1400-1600 fps).
~ 2 MOA, then things went south after 12.5gr (1575fps)

Red Dot, in the range of 10.0-14.0 gr under Lyman 280468 (1540-1935 fps).
1.5-2 MOA for five shots at the lower end of the range. Things started opening up to over 3 MOA at around 12.5 gr level

Red Dot (8.0-10.0 gr) VS Unique (8.0-10.0gr) under Lyman 280468 (1300-1560 fps)
Red Dot gave me slightly better groups (1.5-2.0 MOA VS 1.75-2.5 MOA) across five shots and ~20 more fps at any given charge level. 8.5-9.0 gr appeared to be the sweet spot with Red Dot. With Unique it was at the upper end of the range (9.5-10.0 gr).

All of those series were with air cooled wheelweights. Since I shot them I have gotten more rigorous with weight sorting bullets and taken to oven heat treating most everything I put though a 270, particularly anything I want to shoot faster than 1600 FPS.

I loaded up some using Unique, 14-15.5gr 20 cs. total for a trial. Will let you know how it goes.

Lyman 28473 with Unique was my first successful cast boolit rifle load. 40 years ago I had only 2 center fire rifles, a 30-40 krag (which I didn't shoot) and a 270 with a Douglas barrel. The load was from Lyman 45 th addition. 15.0 grs of unique (newer Lyman book shows load at over max) Boolit was seated out to barely touch the lands. Around inch groups at 80 yds.

The load hit dead center at 80 yards, with my 130 j...b sighted 3 inches high at 100 yards. The rifle and those two loads did every thing for me. Potguts, white tail jacks, rock chucks, deer and elk.

Thanks Stana that is certainly encouraging! I won't get to the range for a little while but I am anxious to try this load. My j-word loads work fine in this single shot Handirifle, we will see what I can do with my boolits.

My boolits, 130 gr with Unique not up to max. resulted in 1.87" 5 shot group at 50 yds. I will experiment with that a little more and see what it will do at further distances. Tried 15.0 and 15.5 but they weren't as accurate. I want to try 2400 and Rx7 too in the future. No leading at all with any of the loads I tested.

Took My chrony to the range Tuesday.
Here's what I got from the one load with Rx7 I had to test. Had been using 4198 and would get one hole fifty yard groups but the barrel would lead up after a while and groups would open.

Bullet RCBS 150 grain. Air cooled 2:6 alloy.
Powder Rx7 22.0 grains
Primer Wolf LR
Rifle 270 win Weatherby Vanguard 24” barrel.

Three shots over chrony. Max dev 40 fps.
1805
1783
1823

Shot a 9 shot group at 100 yards measuring 1.80” vertical and 1.985” horizontal.
This rifle has never been anymore than a 1 ½ MOA gun so that’s not to far off.

Plan to increase load to 23.0 grains and reduce some to 20.0 grains. May also try 12.0 grains of Unique. Which books at 1604 fps. My calculations from the book numbers show 25.0 grains of Rx7 should yield 1950 fps with the 150 grain bullet.

I had good results from mine with 2400. I believe I was in the 17 to 21 gr range, but am not sure exactly.
Haven't shot cast, or anything, in the 270 in over 3 years but do know it wasn't tough to get into the 1.5 inch range for 5 at 100 yards with 2400.

Thanks guys that is all good encouragement for me! Sometimes getting there is half the fun in this hobby.
