I use 130 grain jacketed hollow points that I make... And some 130 grain cast boolits that I gas checked..
The jacketed I use the normal load for jacketed bullets.
The Cast, I use 9 gr Unique. (A very uneventful load) Had to laugh the first time I fired on.. Gave it to my son, who shot one and got a very amusing look on his face.. kind of like 'What the heck was that, did it really go off?' Excellent load for someone who is scared of high-powered rifles.. or kids..
The other load, is 35 grains of BL-C2 under the 130 grain jacketed... Lighter than the 150grain full power load for jacketed,... can shoot it all day without any problems..

170 gr lee fn gas checked over slightly less than 9 gr unique. As 7of7 says it is very mild bit accurate fun and cheap. I would suggest a wliams fp peep.

I use a Lyman 31141 gas check, drops around 170 Gr. and will shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yds. Haven't shot it any further yet.. Nice flat point, good boolit in my .30-30...
Just my opinion..

it is a gas checked bullet design , but you do put the check on or leave it unchecked for the 9r of unique.

i have the lee c309-170f mold and i am wanting to try unchecked light loads

I have a 1960 Marlin 336 Texan and it proved to be a problem child. It ran .305 across the lands and .309 in the grooves. The real issue was the barrel had almost no throat at all, just a small bevel where the chamber entered the barrel. Bullets with body sticking out of the case would not chamber.

Some years back one of our first group buys was the "Fat 30" which used a tapered nose. I had Mountain Molds make up a custom version of this that ran. 311 on the body and a tapered long nose. There was almost no body sticking out of the case, so the round chambered without a problem.

It proved to be a good design and the rifle shoots very well with this bullet, but not so well with others bullets. I don't think this was a common problem in Marlin rifles as I have another without this issue. The other rifle was made in 1972.
