Nice rifle, I just picked up a 1895 GBL in 45-70.

As for the Lee 459-405HB, it has a round noise and is more suitable for a trap door type rifle. Also, for a tube mag, I would not recommend a round noise boolit. The 457-405-F would be a better choice.

As for load, IMR recommends:

405 GR. CAST LFP IMR 4198 .458" 2.540" 30.0 1370 17,000 CUP 32.0 1462 19,000 CUP
Or
400 GR. SPR JFP IMR 4198 .458" 2.540" 43.0 1868 31,600 CUP 46.0 1960 37,600 CUP

And Lymam recommends 36.5 to 40.5 which sounds about right.

i have the mold you want and it has a nice little nose flat and does fine in the mag tube. i havent tried any full power loads with it but she sure does swell with 12gr of unique with WLR primer in a R-P case.

come check us out over at marlin owners.

try your marlin with these...

500gr rcbs gc boolit with 32 gr rl-7 sparked with a lr rpimer inside a rp case....or...

420 lyman flatnose boolit pb...34gr rl-7 ...sparked with cci lr mag primer...rp case.

both these should be great for just about anything you would want in the lower 48.

guys up here load em a little hotter for the big stuff.

I have a Marlin 1895 Lever Eveloution that is a lot of fun to shoot with RCBS 300 gr FNGC boolits. They shoot better than the jacketed I have tried.
With IMR4198 I can get them to 2000fps over a crony.

i have shot 2 boxes of hornady 350g round nose bullets through my guide gun with no trouble at all. and i load them STOUT! if there was going to be an issue with recoil ignition, i would have found it by now. the only thing that i can comment on with the lee hollow base, is what i was warned about. apparently, if you load them very warm at all, the skirt will break off. after being told that, i shied away from buying the mold. i ended up with the lee 340g flat base instead. i love this gun, it is a lot of fun to shoot. at least after installing a limbsaver recoil pad onto it. 2 screws, and you will not believe the difference. especially on the warmer loads. IMR 4198 will give you the best performance in your guide gun, at least that is what mine likes.

i recently loaded some imr 4198 with the rcbs and it is a very clean load leaving no debri in the barrel after the shot as the lower 3031 loads seem to do.

load is such...30gr imr-4198,,cci 200 lr primer,, rp case,, boolit lubed with my b/w and vegi shortening and peanut oil,, and of course the rcbs 45-500fp boolit that casts at 532 +- for me.

this is 2 grains under the max in my little book and i feel this will do whatever it will be required to do. i just need time now to do some accuracy tests with it and run it over the screens to see what it is actually flying at speed wise ,, but it levers thru great and the loaded shell looks boss and feels rite weight wise in my hand.

Try H322 for your jacketed bullets.

Swamp: my suggestion is that you send me that rifle and I will work up a load for it, and test it later this year, send it back to you around next March.

Does this work for you? :kidding:

In lue of that, get a copy of the August 2007 issue #248 of Handloader Magazine.

Brian Pearce did the definative article on reloading for the Marlin .45-70's. There is about 200 loads for everything from Plinking to Ewephumps.

Best $5 you'll spend on loading for the .45-70. It is my most treasured magazine, and I have read it 100 times easy.

Swampman that is a fine looking rig! I love leverguns, short, handy, accurate and packs a punch. Damn good hog medicine too.

Swampman watch out if you are a stock creeper. With full power loads that gun comes back with authority. Scope nose hurts, ask me how I know.

HB designs have an upper pressure limit that is defined by when the base blows out
and upsets the boolit as it leaves the muzzle. I use this design to make a very worn
Trapdoor work well, but have never tried it in the GG.

I use the RCBS 405 GC design with excellent results at 1750 fps, using 57 gr of
W748, which is a very low pressure load - meets trapdoor pressure specs.

Na....I think he may have shot it. Like maybe 60 times with Hornady leaver revolution ammo.

Now If you can excuse me, I need to change my frozen bag of peas for a fresh one............:groner:

Of all my rifles, my GG is by far the one I love most. I shoot the 405-f with 34 grains h4198Extreme for target work and 40 gr. for boulder busting fun! ( Come to think of it, the 34 gr. load breaks boulders too lol).

I shoot that bullet out of 2 standard length Marlins .

Cast themas cold as you can & still get good bullets . Size to .460" . Marlins like big bullets .

God bless

mr. swampman...where did you go bud? i hope you didnt get discouraged by some hot loaded shells thru your gg. it can and is a ton of fun when fed the rite on stuff...would like to hear back from you as to your experience with your knucle buster...[which their is a cure for also] .

i recently took my scope off and installed my favorite hunter site...full buckhorn rear with the little insert taken out and used as a forward peep...never shot anything as fast as this sturdy sight.

I use the RCBS 405 gr GC bullet as well. With blue angel lube and gas check it comes out weighing 433 gr. The load I use is 50gr of H4895 and mag primer. It shoots 1.5 inch groups at 100 yds for 3 shots. Then the shooter has to take a break and let his eyes get back into focus.

Ranch Dog 460-340 and 460-420 with 4759 powder. The former is more pleasant to shoot.

I've been using 31 grains of IMR-4198 under a Georgia Arms 405 cast lead bullet. The recoil isn't bad. The scope is a Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32.
