View Full Version : Hornady cam-lock trimmer vs HF chopsaw?

For trimming 9mm cases, etc., to swage lighter boolits,
would the Hornady trimmer work with the HF chopsaw?
Not sure how the cam-lock operates, the handle might get in the way.

Thinking of turning the chopsaw around on it's base like BT did.
The Hornady is cheaper than the RCBS and doesn't require collets.

No experience with the Hornady, but I'll bet the Forster case trimmer would work just about perfectly for this application! It also requires collets, but IIRC the design is a bit more streamlined than the Hornady.

Oh, and did I mention that I already own one with the three most commonly used collets... ;)

Were I to use the HF 42307? chop saw to trim cases, I'd mount a wood or ? dowel rod in the liitle vise and set it(thread a nut onto the dowel?) to trim off the amount I desire. If vise doesn't line up or allow enough material to be chopped then replace it with a home grown variety.
Even a block of 2x4 with a dowel inserted in it.
You'd then have a more solid holder for the neck. Cut off material could be easily removed.
FWIW
That cam lock is like one on some Lyman trimmers of years back.
Lyman had a ball bearing in middle for centering and two pieces which extended into extractor groove which centered onto case when the small handle was rotated.
Was just working on my old Lyman electrical trimmer over the weekend. They also had a drill press model which mounted on a board and was then used in conjunction with the standard drill press-small or large. Was actually very efficient. Forster had a similar one but it used their colletts.

Take the shaft out and turn it around backwards like some of the other guys here and I think it would work fine.

There are some good ideas on this thread.

Mine is post # 25

An elegant but simple solution. I've got a Lyman case trimmer as well, but I don't really care for it. This would be a good use for it.

Yep, that's what I was talking about. I think BT Sniper has a similar set up with a RCBS trimmer and the HF saw.

Well said.

I do find that deprimming cases first will result in a straighter cut.

Does work pretty well and FAST.

The Proxxon saw has an adjuster built in, so you can adjust the length of your cut without moving the trimmer .

I've been offline for a while.

Guess I will try reversing the Lyman chuck, just doesn't look like enough room
for the little blade on the HF saw.
Want to keep away from getting a pile of collets.
Proxxon saw looks good but too expen$ive!
Maybe a tiny Jedi Lightsaber would work...

I have a video that I will be posting up later today, showing the ultimate solution! I'll make a new thread for it.

Does it use an Industrial Laser?

Sorry, I`m watching a Bond movie...

Sorry for the delay in making and posting the video.

MY stocking feet slipped on the wooden stairs to the cellar, and I broke a rib. As soon as it's healed enough (and I get the courage to re-visit the stairs), I will do the video. I also watched a bunch of James Bond this past week.

Dang, hope by now you`re feeling better!
If you just don`t like slippers you could try those hospital socks,
either will have some rubber tread on the bottom.
Waiting for the vid but take your time...
