For about a year or two now one of the guns on my short list has been a M17. I wanted a classic six inch, six shot, standard barrel gun, no full lugs or 10 shooters for me, thank you.

A month or two ago I was mentioning this to a friend, and he said he had one he might be willing to part with. He said he would probably want @$400 for it. It seems that any I see in the used racks around here are going for more than that. Anyhow, we shoot Highpower Rifle together and this weekend was one of our matches, so I gave him a call yesterday and told him if he was still interested to bring it along today.

It is a 17-6 in pretty good condition. A turn line is the only wear I can see on it. I'm not very good at rating, but I would say excellent? It is a classic six inch blued six shooter, just what I want. Interestingly, SCSW says that the 17-6 model was the start of the full luggers, but there is a note that says "some early 17-6s reported without full lug." No box, papers or tools, and it came with a set of Hogue rubbers. So I say, "You said you want $400 for her?" He said "You're a friend, I'll take $375." I thought that was a fantastic price.

I think I did just fine. Since he gave me such a good price, I even gave him back the Hogues. I hate those grips, but he likes them and he has an L frame he could put them on. I have other K frame grips I can put on to shoot right now, but I think a classic beauty like this needs something special. Maybe some original S&W magnas, or then again I'm partial to Ahrends. Maybe I'll try their retro targets?

How did I do? I think $375 is a great deal on a K22.

I'll post pics as soon as my ammendment clears and I can get the gun. In my county of NYS, it should be within two weeks, hopefully closer to one.

Better get a case of ammo, you'll need it! I have a 1955 K22 Masterpiece that is the finest shooting handgun that I have ever fired. Been shooting it for over 30 yrs and can't count the 10 rings that it has obliterated. Great practice pistol for shooting the K-38 Masterpiece.

I put a set of Herrets on it many years back after I chipped one of the original grips. They feel 'right' on this pistol.

You made a good buy there.

My first pistola was a model 17. I put it on lay a way with my second check working in a grocery store as a teenager. The first check bought a nice watch. My mother had to pick it up for me. It hasn't been shot since 12-23-1998 when my brother left a single carbon ring on an otherwise clean cylinder. It has remained in a brown bag in the safe since being picked up from the Sheriff's Office...

I had a S&W K22 or model 17 in 8 3/8" for years until I got hurting for money to pay bills.
I shot many rabbits, squils & even a Crow kept the freezer with meat in the winter when there was no work. Since I have bought several Ruger 22 auto pistols even a Victor (jammed ever other shot).

Almost forgot the 10 shot Stainless Steel S&W 22 revolver I had couldn’t hit a bull in the a$$ it had a bad cylinder with several of the holes out of line never would group better than the bottom of a 5 gal bucket at 25yrds.
Miss the first blue K22 but love the Dan Wesson 10" silhouette converted into double action.

Better keep her they are hard to find.

Shooter6br,

We have similar some tastes. I own a 5 screw "pre" 25-2 S&W 1955 Target .45 ACP revolver, and two Citoris, although mine are in 16 & 20 gauge,

I was lucky enough to get a K38 masterpiece for $325, the guy I bought it from had inherited it from his father, I never met him, but from his collection i guess he was a competition shooter in the 70's and 80's and the guy I know, isn't. I didn't even know how good it was until I started casting for it and really honed-in the load. I've only bet $1 bullseyes at the range a couple times with it, but so far I'm undefeated. I don't think I'll ever sell it cause what would I buy with the money, except a less accurate gun?

Long ago, I built three .22 LR six inch Security Six revolvers for Ruger. I was disappointed that they never went into production, and that Ruger never saw fit to put decent sights on the SP-101's. I passed recently on both a Smith Model 18 .22LR, and a K-38 Combat Masterpiece, both in great shape...... wanted to think about it overnight since I had just bought too many guns....... of course they were gone the next day. I'll kick myself for that one for a while yet!

My K22 was a 1970 XMAS gift from my fiance, now my wife of almost 40 years. I am a revolver guy and have had most of the S&Ws (14,15,18, 27, 29, 25, 1917) over the years, but the K22 is by far my favorite. Accurate, cheap to shoot, and well balanced. I had S&W install the target hammer and trigger and added a set of S&W rosewood target grips. I can't guess how many rounds it has shot or how much game it has taken, but I do know that it definitely is NOT for sale.

Sorry I'm late with the pics; I picked her up last Tuesday but I've been shooting and cleaning and in general just having a great time!

Like I said in the original post, I gave the Hogue rubbers back to the seller as I have no use foir them and he does. I put a pair of Targets I had laying around on in order to snap a few pics:

I was delighted that, as it turns out, my friend still had the box, papers, and unopened tools. He can't find the original grips (which are essentially the same as the ones I put on) but he says if they turn up they're mine.

I'd say other than being filthy she was in pretty good shape. There is a turn line and a little muzzle blue wear

but otherwise looking good! Like I said, I paid $375 for it. I put the K frame Targets I had lying around on it to shoot, and another friend gave me a set of Magna service stocks. I have placed an order for a set of Ahrends Retro Targets.

Great looking revolver. My model 17 and 18 are my two favorite's. At 375 you got a fantastic deal.
