BP range ?

I have watched people shoot muzzle loaders clean out to 1200 yards and yes they shoot quite good. The last shoot I went to at 1200 yards was won by a guy shooting a Parker Hale Volunteer rifle with a score of 50 8Vs out of a possible 50 10 Vs. The target was an old 5V 1000 yard target and had a 5 ring about 40 inches with a V ring of around 20 inches. AT 1200 yards they looked like little dots. The Volunteer rifle is a muzzle loading 45 caliber rifle with a 1 in 20 twist and the guy shot 130 gr of FFG GOEX and a 475 gr pure lead bullet with a card wad and a wonder wad under the bullet.

It matters not whether you use BP or smokeless. What enables you to shoot real long distances is length-of-bullet with corresponding correct twist. For example, I use a 500 gr. bullet with a 1:20 twist in my .45-70. I can shoot MOA under good conditions using a Lee Shaver sight out to the limits of my shooting range, which is just under 900 yds. I've heard that when the military developed the 1881 pattern 500 gr. .45 cal. bullet for the .45-70 they found it would stabilize to 3500 yds. I assume if you were good enough at shooting you could hit something at that range if your bullet was still stabilized. In real life the limiting factor is how well we can see and hold and dope wind.
