View Full Version : Let's play a game of "guess that boolit"

NoZombies

Rules are simple, post a photo of a bullet that clearly defines it's shape, use more than one photo if you must. Then we all try to guess what the boolit in the photo is.

Custom made, really old, etc, are all okay, this isn't a contest, it's a game.

Here's my go:

I'll be back to give you the answer in a few days. in the mean time, make your guesses, and post your photos, and let's have some fun with it!

If I had to guess, not knowing the diameter of the boolit, I would say it's a Lyman 452389 185gr. Am I close?

First glance I thought 12 gauge slug?

But . . . could it be . . .

H&G #79?

Lyman 452389?

I will say that one guess is right. I'll tell you which one tomorrow.

In the mean-time, anyone have any other photos?

Could it be a gallery bullet for a black powder cartridge such as a .38-55 or .45-70?

And believe it or not, this is the answer!

22 cal button nose

They weigh 23 grains in my alloy, meaning about 6,000 from a 20# pot. I haven't cast anywhere near that many of these things, and they require a magnifying glass to sort.

This is the third smallest boolit I cast.

The smallest is a single cavity .185" round ball. It weighs about 9 grains. The second smallest is a .20 hollow base spitzer that weighs 15 grains (for 20 caliber air rifles). I'm running late for something, so I'll post pictures later.

Lyman 20ga slug?

You were close, but the gauge was incorrect.

It is a Lyman 12ga cast shotgun slug (681 Diameter) 525 Grain.

http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/medium/778/778041.jpg

It is cast from a Lyman 1-Cavity Shotshell Sabot Slug Bullet Mold.

It shoots decently from a Winchester wad, even if it does look like a giant air gun pellet.

Since I did not really have anything else in the picture for perspective, I will say kudos to you sir for your answer.

Go to this thread, (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?p=1309787) and see the .20 "pellet" that I cast. I use it in a blue streak as well. Also see there the ball that I cast that's even smaller than that!

Man, that was my first guess, but thought it looked too "long" to be 12 GA...

I've been looking for one of those molds in 20 ga too, maybe it was just my wishful thinking :)

Hey Turbo, my guess is: a custom mold made by accuratemolds.com

Am I close? How does it shoot?

Accurate Mold 36-210C, lubed with Felix lube.

Gear

Yes, it’s the AM #36-210, but that’s not Felix lube that’s a mixture of a bunch of different lubes I had a little bit of thrown together in an empty JPW can that I dumped all together from whenever I have change lubes in my sizer and pump enough lube through it to get the previous lube out of it and switch to the new lube. Melted altogether and threw in a couple tablespoons of JPW. Turned out to be just about the best lube I’ve used the problem is I don’t know the exact concentrations and its made from scraps of everything from the old NRA 50/50 to Speed Green to BAC to Canberra Red to some of my homemade lubes including some BP lubes that have no petroleum based ingredients in them and are made from food base products. If I knew exactly what all was in it and the concentration levels I’d make up a whole bunch of it.

Shoots just as accurately as any other full wad cutter boolit load I've tried out of most of my guns although I do have a 38-spl derringer that didn't stabilize it and it keyholed out of it and that gun does fine with shorter more conventional full wad cutter boolits. On the other hand my 357-max carbine rifle shoots it tighter then regular shorter lighter full wad cutter boolits.

That's a coiled snake, ready to strike both directions! :drinks:

Yah, packs a wallop in both directions. Especially from a light weight 38-spl pocket revolver. Tested some of my best loads for the 38-spl. case size (Blue Dot powder) in one of those little guns just yesterday. Punched through six 2-liter pop bottles filled with water lined up in the row and then buried themselves a couple inches deep in the hard clay dirt behind but also twisted that little gun in my hand real good in the process. Don’t feel under gunned in the least with those loads even though it’s only a 38-spl. pocket revolver but follow up shots aren’t quick and easy by any means. Packs a heck of a wallop in my bigger 357-mag guns and I want to try the load I’ve worked up for them in my 357-max carbine rifle on something big to see how they do. I’m thinking a black bear hunt this fall but that is still all up in the air. It is just down right amazing what a big flat nosed hard cast boolit with a very high sectional density can do. I've been calling it my "sledgehammer boolit". :-D

Floydster, if I'm not mistaken that's an old Ideal boolit design. If I remember correctly they made that design for 270, 30, & 8mm caliber sizes and possibly a few others. Which size is yours?

Looks like I was too slow answering today.

I have an old Ideal 311413 too, and I just love that mold.

I rescued it from a friend who had it just laying around all rusted up, at the bottom of a pile of tools in the shed, many years ago.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/picture.php?albumid=539&pictureid=3882

It may not be pretty on the outside, but it casts a real sweetheart of a boolit.

The mold is definitely a keeper.
