I have a new 1894SS and would like some load/boolit suggestions. I currently do not cast. Any suggestions?

I am assuming that your rifle is in 44 mag. I use a 200 gr lead round nose flat point bullet I buy commercially sized .430 with 6 gr of red dot for a plinking load. I also use a 240 gr RNFP commercial bullet sized 430 and 10 gr of Unique for a more vigorous load for plinking and small game hunting. I use a lee SWC 240 gr GC bullet cast from wheel weights and 24 gr of W296 for deer hunting with the same rifle. A lot of people like heavier slugs but I find the 240 to 260 gr bullets are heavy enough for most uses.

Thanks for the input, Nick. Yes, it is a .44, sorry. At what weight will I start having feeding problems? I just ordered some 250 gr. Nosler Partitions. Where did you get your 240 gr. rnfp?

Kurt,

It's not the weight but the OAL that causes feeding problems. Some Marlins in 44 won't handle a 1.61 well while mine without modification can handle up to 1.73. It's a trial and error thing that you just have to sit around and play with till you get "your" rifle figured out.

My only comment to you would be to slug the throat. If it will permit .002 over bore, then use it. Loads will be much less finicky.
