I have recently acquired a 1980 Colt Trooper Mk III 357 magnum and want to develop some cast loads (and some J-word loads, too). Where on the food chain is this revolver with respect to the strength of its action. The gun is tight, and wonderfully accurate with wadcutters, but how comfortable should I be if I wanted to up the ante with some 2400 and 158gr SWC loads? Is it closer to a S&W N frame or a New Vaquero?

An interesting sidebar, this gun has an unusual 5" barrel, making a holster selection a bit of a chore.

Stout. On par with M27 Smith or perhaps a bit more so.

Agreed. Every bit of a S&W 586/686, and then some. No short-cylinder issues like the N-frame 357s present. You gotcha a good 'un!

As long as you don't try and hot rod it past what you find is most load books, you will be just fine.

Mine has shot lots of full charge 158 grain JHP 357s with no trouble and it is amazingly accurate. Like 3/4 inch at 25 yards accurate with iron sights. You got a dandy!!!!

Would That go for my MK5?

Thanks

Very strong, durable revolvers. Accurate and nicely finished. Any police markings under the stocks? The MKV is just as strong with a faster hammer fall due to shorter stroke.

Thanks. I haven't check the stocks, but I doubt it. Its an 8"

Matt

P.S. No markings under the stocks.

I came very close to buying one of those a few months back but got to thinking about parts availability and service from Colt. I decided against it.

Bought one of those for my wife back in 79, I've always gone with reloading manual loads and it really likes 14grs of old 2400 under a 158 gr. Lee RNFP. Never owned a chrony so have no idea what the velocity is but it kicks and is very accurate. Nice gun.
