I have been thinking about trying some RL-7 in my 45-70 for reduced loads. Somewhere around 33 to 35 grains. How position sensitive is this powder and do you need a filler? If so what type.

What are you loading in the 45-70 say around 1200 FPS and also around 1500 FPS, 300 grain LFP, in a 24 inch Marlin.

According to the staff ballistician at Accurate, 25.3-28.2 gr of their 5744 will push a 350 gr bullet between 1325 and 1475 FPs. I imagine the 300 gr bullets will be similar.
You can also check out www,gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm
This sight has a variety of loads listed for many rifle cartridges using pistol powders for CASS usage.
I plan on trying their loads in a few weeks.

Can it be? Sure. So can a lot of other things. But it all depends on bullet weight and how the gun is used.

If I wanted to make lever music and not worry, bullet makes the best filler. Something in the 420 grain range and up works nicely.

For 1200 there are powder way better than re7. Try 2400, around 24 to start. I get 1300 with that load and a 420 gr bullet. I don't shoot any 300 gr cast so I don't know for sure.
For the 1500 fps range you can start using the re7 and I doubt the position sensitivity will ever be an issue. If the bullets hit close together on the target then you know it is not an issue.

+1 on the 2400. I use 22.0 grains for a nice soft load with Lyman 457-191s, 24 grains with the excellent RCBS 45-325U (My pick for accuracy at low recoil levels.) For a hotter load closer to your spec, 33.5 grains of RL-7 under the same Lyman boolit gave me just a tad over 1500 fps, while pushing the RCBS boolit at about 1450. Both of these loads gave me some mild leading, the 2400 loads did not. YMMV

dont know about the lite boolits but do know about the 4 and 500 gr boolits as well as the 405gr jacketed and RL-7.

i used to load 34gr with no filler and finally got my chronagragh working and fired some over it. the spread was in the 40's and 50's fps diference

i then tryed cornmeal for filler and enough to touch the bottom of the boolits. i loaded enough cm to just touch or compress juas a small amount. the spread in fps came down bunch's...around the 10 to 15 amount of spread now...and the accuracy...well it came way up as well with open 1-hole 5 shot groups at 100yds.

just my 2-cents worth.

Personally I never liked "squib" loads in a large case and you are talking about roughly a 50% density load which leaves a lot of air space in the case.

I would suggest asking Accurate Armes and Alliant what powder they recommend and at what levels before trying any you find online...I'm way to paranoid to use someone elses data unless I check with a powder maker first.

Accurate Arms and Lymans manual list 5744 and 4759 with 300 gr +/- bullets in the Trapdoor...I suggest looking at the online manuals for some data.

www.gmdr.com is a very good place to check almost ANY reloading data...I use it quite frequently.
