If I was to reload for my Israeli Mauser, which I do with jwords, but wanted to use cast (LEE C309-160-R) boolits over say 26-27 grains of IMR4895 would I need to use a filler?

The same goes for 30-06 with say 31-32 grains of IMR4895, would a filler be needed or could it be loaded without?

I have a Red Dot load for my '06 but was kicking around the other two loads because I have the needed ingredients on hand.

Opinions please.

I shoot 30g of IMR and Surplus 4895 in semi auto and bolt 308's with 155-200g bullets.I have used filler and no filler and saw no accuracy or uniformity difference.Neither are particularly uniform at 20-30 Sd's but shoot close to or just at MOA and cycle the action of the semi.velocity is in the 1750 range.

You could be right on the edge as far a filler goes with that weight boolit. Alloy hardness, crimp, primer, will all have an effect on your load.

Load some up and see how they shoot.

Suggest a 1/2 gr dacron filler with the 7.62 load and a 3/4 gr dacron filler with the '06 load. As mentioned you might be on the edge of efficiency +/- with that weight bullet and 4895 in both cartridges, particularly the '06. Might also tweak the load up in the 7.62 a gr or two and down a gr or two in the '06. If you chronograph the SDs should be down in the 12 - 20 fps range with the dacron filler and will be higher without the filler. That translates to better ignition and accuracy if you're not driving the bullet too fast.

Do you guys know of any videos of loading a shell with dacron? You don't want to pack it right, just tuck it in to hold the powder but don't tamp it down, right?

I'm just leary of stuffing something in a shell that wasn't there to start with.

Go to the next forum and read the sticky "filler". I explain it there and there are some pictures in the thread also.

Thanks, I couldn't find nothing other than talking about using fillers.

Here is how bad I am at dragging my feet on something new, lol. I started looking into IMR 4198 and the 7.62/308 cast loads and found this thread from last year that I asked about loads and fillers. I forgot all about it.

No need for procrastination or feet dragging. Using a dacron filler is not difficult at all. Give it a try.
