Hi,

I saw a link to this forum over at subguns. I have three bricks of lead that I am going to make into ingots. Try to cut and saw them to fit my Lee melter was a problem. So I bought a 4 quart cast iron pot. I will try to melt them with propane camping grill. I assume these are pure lead, so anything that I can scape off with fluxing should be waste. I am confused at what will my alloyed metal will look like compared to dross. I have some Frankfort powdered flux. I will try to post some photos so you can see what it on these bricks.

thanks

You can find pics on my facebook, file size was too large. These are many years old and were stored in a -20 freezer shielding isotopes.

"Dross" is the polite name for the dirt, crud, etc. that is in the metal and from the surface of the pot. Fluxing the mix thoroughly before skimming will let you remove it and it's easy to tell which is which.....the dross floats on top. The top of your alloy should have a bright silvery look after skimming if the temperature is right.

By the way, your link to pics appears to be "kaput"!:?

Do yourself a favor and do not use Frank powder stuff. The stuff is nasty, leaves black goo on everything. Get you some good clean sawdust, clean = straight wood, not ply or chip board or anything with glue. Let it burn off to ash, stir in and skim clean. Gtek

I forgot the big one- DRY sawdust. Avoid Tinsel fairy visit. Gtek

Read the sticky "Gold and Purple and Blue... Oh My!" above. It will tell you all you need to know.
