Found 2 loaded cases marked 44 B.D. on them winchester repeating arms. Anyone know what this is? Rimmed cartridge, just above the rim it mics at .452 just below the Boolit it mics at .444. Length of case .557.

Probably a 44 Bull Dog. "Cartridges of the World" (Barnes) shows a sketch of the cartridge base with the "44 B.D." and "W.R.A. Co" as headstamp text. Dimensions are in the ballpark, per Barnes. The drawing appears to show an outside-lubricated lead bullet. Bullet diameter is given as .440".

Barnes states that British Webley and American Harrington & Richardson revolvers chambered it, starting roughly 1880. USA manufacture of the ammo ended about 1938-39. Ballistics were a 170 grain bullet at 460 FPS, for about 80 ft./lbs. of energy. That would raise quite a welt.
