I like 296, still have about 6 lbs left from a couple of 8 lb cans we bought years ago, since been transferred to 1lb cans.

Try Powder Valley. It's hard to beat their price on any powder.

I agree its hard to find it any cheaper then powder valley if your buying quanity. But keep in mind theres shipping and hazmat charges so if a guy wants to buy less then 8 lbs it makes sense to buy it localy. Even buying one 8lb keg it may be cheaper localy. When i order from theim i like to order at least 4 kegs at a time.

Sometimes they have hazmat/shipping sales.. best to look out for those when you can.. Ballistic Products also has sales like that, but not sure if their prices match PV.. Wideners also sometimes has sales like that, you buy xx amt and they pick up hazmat.. it is best to buy it before you need it.

You may want to consider trying WC297 from Pat's Reloading at $89.99 for eight pounds and buy in bulk...

I've never heard of WC297, is this a new powder?

From what I understand, it's a surplus powder a bit slower than 296.. and apparently uses similar data..

Sargenv is correct. I have 48 pounds of it, but have not had time to play with it much. Lloyd Smale has probably used it more than most I would guess.

its a real good powder. It is slower then 110. My loading has shown it about half way between 110 and 1680 which makes it good for loading any cartridge in the area those two powders cover. I have used a bunch of it in the 50 beowolf. It burns so much cooler then the lil gun i was using. 5 quick shots with lilgun and you can about light a cigerette off the barrel. 5 shots with 296 and you can grab the barrel with your hand. Ive also used it in the 500 linebaugh 475 line. 454 45 colt and 44 mag. It works real well in all of them. It definately needs a good primer like a cci 350 to ignite it well and isnt a good powder for downloading much. About as mild as a guy wants to go is using loads recomended for top end loads using 110. wc820 is a bit more vesitile especially if your loading for the 45 colt and 44 mag or smaller rounds but i really like 297 too.

Lloyd, I prefer to stick with 296. However I have a problem/question, I want to order in bulk so to speak. My powder cabinet is set up for basically 1lb cans.
Do places like Powder Valley give a discount off the 1lb can prices when you order multiple cans of powder or is one stuck with paying the 1lb price for however many they want?

I am working from a friends computer that won't let me send an email so i can't ask them.

Would you happen to know?

Changeling You can still order the 8 pound Kegs. Just transfer say one pound of it to a 1 pound container and make sure you mark it correctly.

As far as I know they do not offer a cheaper price for multiple 1 pound can orders.

Like Lloyd said, the 297 is a good all around powder for most things using data for 296.

I have burned through one jusg in my 41,44, and 454. For those I can say this on the burn rate compared to my last lot of cannister W-296,

In the 41, my load for a 200gr SJHP was 20.5grs of 296 it took 21grs of WC-297 to match it.

In the 44, my loads for a 240gr SJHP was 23.5grs, and it takes 24.5 to match it.

In the 454 I am shooting both a 260gr mag HP and the 265gr RNFP GC from Cast Performance and I simply fill the case to the bottom of the bullet. They both average around 1450 from my 8.375" barrel.

Not sure how the lot's change from one to the next, but overall I still have two jugs and will order more as funds allow.

Personally I couldn't justify the added cost per pound of 296 after I tried out the 297.
