Just came into posession of 5 full boxes of Winchester (red and yellow box) 32-20 WCF ammo from days gone by. The boxes are completely sealed in wax. Yes, taped shut and coverd with wax. Cut one box open. Rounds look new. Number on the bottom of the insert box is 42. Question is - Are they corrosive primed? Does any one know what year Winchester (WRA headstamp) went to non corrosive in Commercial ammo. I know what it is for Winchester military 30-06 and 30 carbine, But what about commercial production?

Another question. Do they have collector value?

If the boxes had not been completely covered with masking tape and then completely covered with wax, I would say there might be some collectors value in the boxes. I worked very hard on the one I opened up and it's durn near impossible to get the tape off without prying up the outer collored paper on the box. I am able to see most of the print on the box with a few places not visible. Looked at a collectable ammo website and found that the boxes are 1946 to mid 50's or so. Found some reference to "staynless" priming on some earlier boxes - But would be good to know when Winchester went to non-corrosive on commercial ammo. Still looking for an answer. Slugs in these are 105 grain jacketed soft points - which are atad unusual, as most of what I see in 32-20 is soft lead slugs.

Have you pulled a bullet to see what kind of power is in those rounds. I was given some old 38 S&W ammo that was loaded with black powder.

The 105 gr. is not all that unusual, I have a box of Winchester-Western 32-20 component bullets that are 105 gr. JSP and a box of Remington 100 gr. JSP bullets and a box of C-I-L Imperial 115 gr. JSP. All are for 32-20. Pretty much everything built for commercial consumption after WW2 are non-corrosive, with a few exceptions.

By scraping off a bit more of the tape, I have found the word "Staynless" and "Non Mercuric". I'm gonna say, that answers my question. I believe these will be safe to shoot in my trusted Savage 23C and Browning 53.
