I am starting to learn stuff here that I never would've elsewhere, and have a question. Since you guys use various powders with similar burn rates ALMOST interchagably, would it be safe to assume H. Univ Clays would be okay in a 30-30 since Lyman suggests some Unique loads for cast? When I look in a burning rate chart, it is slightly faster than Unique. I have 3 1/2 lbs I bought quite a while back for my .45acp before I sold it and have no current use for it. Maybe I could burn it up in the 30-30. I have the Lee soup-can and the Lee 170 grfn molds, as well as some lazer-cast 170's. Thanks in advance. Tom

Should be fine, Tom. Being a ball powder, raise muzzle before each shot to get the powder against the primer. Probably not required, but should increase the accuracy. Others might have tried it in a case of this size, but I have not and would not be scared to in the least should I have some on the shelf. ... felix

Not to argue, Felix, but when I looked at the HUC at 30 power, it appeared to be a flat disc shape. Almost like something removed from a sheet with a punch. Would that still be called a ball powder?
To add to my first question, I have a lot of other suitable powders, I just have that HUC that I no longer have a use for other than 38 spcl and thought I could use it up this way. Tom

I concer with Felix. Data on Ubiversal Clays and Unique is almost identical. I used it one time in rifle 7mm mauser with no problems at all. Work the load up as always!

A flat disc powder would typically be more sensitive to the primer. I had just forgotten what it looked like. Anyway, do a comparative test with the powder against the primer and normally placed as from the magazine during a normal motion. ... felix

Thanks, Felix and Mooman76. I'll try some. Tom

tommag,

6.0/Universal under a 120 gr. plain based cast bullet clocked around 1,200 f.p.s. and gave very good accuracy in my .30-30's.:-D

A friend uses 7.5/Universal under a 150 gr. gas checked bullet with very good results.

Good luck,
