my dad has just starting collecting cartridges, mostly military stuff like howitzer shells, and oddball rifle and pistol cases.

what would be a good book for identifying this stuff?

its gonna be his fathers day present.

Do a search for books by Fred A. Datig. Dixie Gun Works(http://tinyurl.com/3vm3p8z) has the basic 3 vol. in soft cover. Various booksellers have hard back editions but are more expensive.

I don't think his books will cover artillery though.

Midway USA has it on backorder, but there is a good review:

Jon Chalk of Spanaway posted:Well worth the money! Loaded with info on every cartridge I have ever heard of, and quite a few I haven't. Easy reading, and well organized. I liked how the author included brief loading info with each cartridge, which makes it easy to compare cartridges. Has a massive dimensional data section in the back that lists all pertinent case dimensions, also has a section on military cartridge markings, which I find useful at the range when I pick up surplus brass that others leave behind. The more I read this book, the better I like it!
