For use in Marlin 1895, 22". I'm casting as solid fp, approx 378gr. Though the barrel slugs at .457, with a cerrosafe casting and Buckshot's help and a pair of his really nice sizers, I've got 'em down to .461". In order to chamber, I found that I have to seat this bullet deeper than the cannelure - to 2.525. I'm crimping with the FCD to just flatten out the slight flare.

My intent is for hogs and white tail in thick eastern woods. Most likely in the sub 50yd range, but possibly up to 100yds. I don't need maximum velocity for sure.

Although I have a number of powders on hand, I have 9lbs of AA5744 I bought specifically for this gun, so that's what I plan to use.

Lyman's 49th specs their 457122 hp as 330gr, so I didn't want to use that data. The same page shows their 457124 as 385gr with 5744 charges ranging from 36.0-40.0. I was leery of using this data since a) obviously not the same bullet, b) my diameter is considerably larger, c) I don't know this bullet's dimensions and my oal is less so I don't know the seating depth (effective case capacity).

Lyman's CB Handbook #4 lists the 457643 as 400gr. with the 5744 range of 31.5-35.0. This seemed like a safer starting point than the 457124. Earlier this month I tested at 32, 33 and 34 grains. All shot well with no visible signs of distress. Sunday I loaded a handful at 33 and got 1 1/2" grouping off the bench at 50yds. At 100yds, I was hitting about 4" low. I only had 3 rnds left, and like a dummy I adjusted the scope to bring em up, so now I have no idea of the grouping. Windage wise they remained within 1 1/2" of target center.

I don't have a chrono so I have no clue of actual speed. The charges I've tried "seem" a bit on the light side. At this point I'd like to know if I can or should go hotter to lessen the trajectory curve a bit?
