HI,
Has anyone tried WC860 IN THE 220 SWIFT?
Or is that a totally bad idea?

Actually, I think they may be a match made in heaven. Contact Jeff Bartlett, see what he says.

I've used WC872 in that cartridge. Don't know how closely it compares to your WC860. Is WC860 also a 50-BMG powder?

Yes Wc860 is a 50 bmg powder but WC 872 never was. Hodgdons #25 shows H870 , 60-63 gr bullet, 49.0 grains , 3035 fps, 36K cup. The 2 or so different lots of WC860 I have used were both slightly FASTER than H870.

When I bought my WC872 from Widener's Reloading they advertised it as 50-BMG powder. I ASSumed that was what it was because that was what the seller said it was. If it isn't 50-BMG powder then what is it?

Please enlighten me.

Although useful in the 50BMG, WC872 was originally fuel for launching 20mm bullets. All these powders vary in burn rate from one lot to another, that's generally why they're surplus. Like swheeler, I have ran into a lot of 860 that burns faster than 870. Not a lot faster, but it's enough that one simply doesn't use 870 data. Start low, work up. The Swift is an overbore cartridge that should work quite well with 860. I've been working on one of those myself, the 6mm/30-40Krag AI.

Some 20 years ago or so, I developed a duplex load for my 45-70 C. Sharps 1875 Business Rifle that used 3.0 grains of either WW-231 or Bullseye and 57.0 grains of AA-8700 to push a 320 grain RCBS GC boolit to 1600 fps. It shot so well that many others in our club copied the load and I won many Buffalo matches with it

Eventually the AA-8700 ran out so I bought WC-860 from Jeff Bartlett and have been using it now for some years as a grain-for-grain substitute for the AA-8700. Sight changes have not been necessary.

I've also used boolits as heavy as 405 grains in my 45-70 rifles by reducing the WC-860 by a few grains...... 56.0 grains for the 405 grain boolit.

Another load that works beautifully in the 38-55 is 2.5 grains of WW-231 and 34.0 grains of WC-860. I use it in the 2.080" WW cases with the Lyman 248 grain boolit and in Starline 2.125" cases with the RCBS-312-BPS or 330 grain Lyman boolits. They are all quite accurate in my Winchester TH Hi-Wall.

When the WC-860 is used up, I have a couple of kegs of the WC-872 waiting.

Love WC860 in my 03A3, Shiloh 45/70, and my M1867 Rolling Block. I use a duplex in the 45/70's but not in the 30-06 great accuracy in all applications.

Regarding WC-860.......100% density load in 6.5 x 55 (55.0 grains) gave 1896-spec ballistics with 140 grain j-words--about 2475-2500 FPS. VERY accurate, I should add.

Hmmmm.......wonder how the stuff would do in a 22-250? I do have some empties out on the bench that need filling.

BB, with WC-867 & 872 available at $49 per 8# from Weidners, why would you pay nearly twice that for WC-860? From all accounts I've read, for all practical purposes the 867 & 872 work the same using a grain-for-grain substitution. When my supply of WC-860 is gone, I already have WC-872 waiting to take it's place.

HI,
I am not buying it now. I bought 40 lbs. at $69 a 8lb jug.
I have been using it successfully in my 7MM/06.
Am hoping to find some data for it or an equivalent powder in the 220 Swift.:Fire::Fire:
