View Full Version : Got a smokin' deal...

but how smokin is the question.

I just picked up a 1975 Super BlackHawk 44Mag 5 1/2" ported barrel that was practically unfired and a safe queen and a 1975 Winchester 94 30-30 in the same condition for $500. Almost had a 357 SBH thrown in for $700 but it was withdrawn at the last moment. There is still an open offer for a Makarov .380 (marked 9mm K) for $100 but I haven't seen it yet to tell if its a real Makarov or one of the clones.

Ive seen most Win 94s selling for $250-350 and the SBH's all still seem to run close to $500. Was the ported barrel standard back then?

Ive been looking for more info on the SBH and current spec shows the 5.5" comes in fluted cylinder only. The one I have is smooth and the cylinder is marked with the frame serial number. The barrel is ported with 3 holes on each side of the front sight. The 2 outside holes are twice as long as the middle one, shaped in a parallelogram. Ive seen "Magna Ported" barrel models on Gunbroker but the name is also etched into the barrel and this has no such markings.

Any ideas if this is just a standard model of 1975, a limited edition, or just an aftermarket custom job?

Groo here
If the owner had the barrel bobbed and ported there may not be any markings.
Is the barrel crown round or concave ? If concave it could be all done by Magnaport
if not then maybe a smith did it...

Here are some photos of the porting and crown. By the looks of the detail shots my camera took, I have some cleaning to do.

Looks like the barrel has been shortened. Might be Magna-port but I am not that familar with their port designs.

Thanks. Ive sent an inquiry in to Ruger to see what they say about the cylinder and possibly the barrel. I am trying to get info from the original owner but its a friend of a friend's (grand maybe) father (in-law maybe). The gentleman has fallen on tough times that I have been told, and I am not sure if he is upset at having to sell them or not. I do know that the .357 SBH that was in the original deal belonged to a (grand) uncle that backed out sorta angrily when they were to be picked up.

On a side note, I just saw the SR1911 on Ruger's website and I want one.

That certainly does not look like Magnaport's work to me.

Every gun I have seen done by Magnaport had a singular long almost slash cut ports, not individual ports like this one.
Also I believe that Magnaport puts their ports farther back from the muzzle.

Might also show and tell on Rugerforum.com under revovlers. I don't think Ruger ever ported the barrels. Then I am not a guru. Ha ha.

ruger never did factory porting and back then a 7.5 inch barrel was the only option on a super. Its not magnaport porting but it does look professional.

Maybe it is just me or a slightly out of focus picture but it appears that there is a ridge around the inside of each of the ports. Seems that might cause a ton of material to be ejected out of the ports due to shaving of the bullets or boolits.
