View Full Version : Neck sizing a 45-70 case????

I seem to be working my brass too much by full length sizing every reload.

I see Meacham T&H Inc makes Bushing Type Neck Sizing Dies, just like we use in BR cartridges.

Is this the only option? Do any of the main-line die makers offer a "neck sizing" die for the 45-70?

Thanks

Have you thought about just backing the die out and neck sizing that way? I do and I still have enough travel on the primer punch to clear 'em out when I size.

I back out my Lyman brand 45-70 dies until it just will knock out the primer. It just so ever touches the case and I don't use case lube. These fit perfectly back into my H&R rerpo trapdoor and work great.

Some size just first 1/4" ~1/2" on the neck with a .45 Colt carbide sizer (the same with a .444 marlin and a .44 Caliber carbide sizer)...I have and it works well..no need to lube the case.

Wally: will a .45 ACP Carbide size die work? Seems like it would?

I have a Lyman Neck sizer for my 45-70 precision loads. I think I got it from Midway several years ago.

I use a Lee 45-70 sizing die backed out to just start sizing the neck, I decap using a universal decapping die. Works great in my #1

The 45-70 standard measurements are .480" diameter at the case mouth O.D. and .504" at the other end before the rim. Many call this a straight walled case. Technically this is a tapered case.

The full length sizing die can be used to great advantage with tapered cases to get only the amount of sizing that will give you the bullet seating tension you minimally need.

Put a fired and un-sized shell in your shell holder with no die in the press. Add the die and turn it down till it resists against the shell at the top of your stroke. Take a couple turns down and size the case, then check if you have boolit seating tension. Keep repeating that till you have sufficient seating tension.

You will have reached the point where sizing is minimal and seating tension is acceptable. This will have worked your brass the least amount possible. Check that the round chambers to see if you have to adjust the die further for chambering a round before you load up a bunch.

This method can also minimize or eliminate the need to flair the case mouth and only a chamfer will be sufficient for bullet seating if you get it just right.

I have my .458 Win Mag sizing die set up this way and have brass that has been loaded over 30 times. The .458 WM also has a similar taper and is not a true straight walled case. Lee tech. dept. recommended this method to me.

Onondaga: Now that makes sense to me!

Thanks.

I just picked up a 45/70 breakaction, and I am gonna try that!

The 310 die set for a .45/70 comes with a neck sizer. Contact the 310 shop and I expect he has one./beagle

Carbide 45 colt die works for me - same .480 case size.

Randy

I never tried one---it may size it down a bit too much

45 ACP is .476 tapering to .473 at neck - it may overwork the expensive brass a little much

I taper crimp my 45-70 rounds with my - carefully adjusted - Lee 7mm X 57 sizer die.
I learned that trick long ago when I needed a taper crimp die for my 38 Super and found that I could use a RCBS 223 Sizer die.
