Took my 1950 vintage Marlin 336A to the range over the weekend to try out a load of 18.4 gr. of 4198 with various cast bullets. The top shooter in which all the bullets touched each other at 50 yards (peep sights) was a the 30 caliber 165 gr. NEI that was sized to .310". Number two was the 311466 sized to .310", with the 311291 sized to .309"coming in a close third. The rifle clearly didn't like the 311041 sized to .310" with groups approaching 2" at 50 yards.
The bullets were seated to a length that slightly pushed them into rifling.
So my light load is 7.0 gr. of Clays with a 311440, and now I have a good start on a hunting load.
