A guy I know thinks he wants to get a H&R in 35 Remington and reem it out to 35 Whelen:holysheep is he nuts or does anyone think these little guns can take it. ( I guess they come in 30-06 so there must be some strength there ). I know the only way to know for sure is to try it but if anyone knows someone who tried to hot rod one of these and failed I can tell him not to try it. by the way, I don't think he even looks at the starting load column when he reloads.

I believe the HR was offered in .35 W for awhile, then dropped from the line.

I had one briefly. It was a factory chambered barrel.

Most of the loads I shot through it were RCBS 35-200-FP over a case full of WC860. Accuracy was OK....nothing exceptional. Recoil was about all I want to deal with on a regular basis.

An interesting cartridge. Eventually I'll probably have another in a bolt gun with a stock design that will handle recoil better than the H&R, but on the other hand, my 35 Rem will do the job on anything I plan to hunt around here and will do it more economically and with less stress on my shoulder.

Due to the weight of the rifle. It would also be a good idea to look into the .358 Winchester.

Do they make the H&R in .35 Remington? I didn't know that.

Guys are getting .357 barrels and reaming them to .357 Maximum. You can get pretty darn close to .35 Remington ballistics with that combo.

I did see an H&R, some kind of commemorative one, in .35 Whelen once. The newer ones are strong enought to handle it.

+1 to that, unfortunately another great but unappreciated cartridge.

The H&R was made in the 35 Whelen. The biggest thing about any of the H&R rifles including the BC with the 34'' barrel is that the weight is light for the big calibers it is built in. A mercury recoil cylinder or similar product would help these rifles alot when it comes time to shoot.Off the bench will be tamed with a good sandbag that allows all day shooting.

The Handi rifle is still available in 35 Whelen. They are big sellers here in Mississippi due to the new law that allows anything 35 cal and above in single shot for primitive weapons season. Last fall a store in the next town sold over 250. He said it was one of his best movers.

I asked Mike Bellm about this conversion and he told me he couldn't set the barrel up properly in a lathe because of the welded on boss for the fore end.

Just order this from the barrel accessory program. 35 Whelen 22" drilled & tapped for both sights & scope base, Part# F404326. If you do not want the 35 rem sell the barrel.

The factory H&R/NEF .35 Whelen barrels have been on-again, off-again for a while. Not sure if they're currently available or not. On a related note, H&R chambers the gun for .500 S&W, a 50K PSI cartridge, so yes, it will handle the Whelen with ease.

H&R has experienced problems with their chambers being too deep, and with Remington factory ammo being out of spec.

If that question was aimed at me....my 35 Rem is a Marlin 336. I don't know if that's an option in the H&R.

Sorry for the confusion.

Look for a big production increase in .35 Handi's again, Louisiana just passed HCR 24, which will allow for .35 Whelen to be used in the primitive rifle season. Think I'm gonna get one too!

I would suggest looking in the used market for the RMEF 1996 model in .35 Whelen that sports a 26" barrel, instead of the 22" they offer today. Mine shoots incredibly, and heard nothing but good stuff from others with the older model.

I will keep an eye out for one. In the meantime I just picked up a .35Whelen H+R with the 22" bbl and camo stocks. Its my first Handi rifle, hope it shoots good! :) :Fire:

I thought the primitive rifle season required at least a .38" groove diameter.

Why they make all those calibers in dinky 22" barrels is a real puzzler. Don't they know real guns have long barrels?

Yeah I was all set to buy another 45/70 but I just found out that our state legislature passed HCR 24 which will allow .35 Whelen. It should go into law next month. It's weird the way they worded it- .35 Whelen, not .35 caliber. I guess that leaves out the .35Rem. Oh well, leave it to politicians to make the rules...
