I just got a base model Ulta dot New old stock. I have concidered getting one for a wile and after reading all the good reports on them here , I got a ultra dot.
I plan to put it on a 10IN Desert Eagle 44 mag.
I am new to red dots, is there anything special to know about them? mounting?
Thanks guys.....Buck

I have one on my Ruger Redhawk. Nothing special comes to mind other than remember to turn it off. Get an extra battery or two for the range bag.

Yea good advice remember to shut it off and keep a couple of batteries on hand. Just mount it like you would any other scope.

A friend of mine has a couple of them on her hard recoiling firearms, she says they hold up better than higher priced "name brand" red dots do. I have no 1st hand experience with them myself.

Which one did you get? If it's a Pan-V then it's too much recoil for that base, IMHO.

Don't mount the ring around any glass. You can use the extension for the front ring and move the sight back. A rubber strap wrench works good for keeping the tubes tight. Warne makes good rings. Maybe there are others.

Desert Eagle. Sounds good to me! I hear you can't shoot cast boolits with it though.

Does it really eat up brass also? What about the 50AE version?

Good tip ! Thank you.
No you cant shoot cast through it . But I am now swaging as well as casting and so I decided to get one.
It does beat the brass up a bit. I have loaded some of my old brass for the eagle twice so far and it still seems ok except for the batterd basees.
Thanks again.....Buck

The rim on brass can get eaten up from the extractor and then cases might no longer extract. But it is a fun gun and very accurate.

I wanted one for years but would not buy factory bullets. But now that I am kicking out good jacketed swaged BOOLITS ,I broke down and got one.
I used the level level, level tool from midway to get the scope on straight and will try it out in the A.M. Thanks for the tips and past and present reviews! WOO HOO!!....Buck

Some test groups I shot at 50 yards with the DE. The 300 XTP shot best with 20 gr of 296. Fed 150 primer.

There you go, buck. Now you've gotta try that load in yours and report back. [smilie=l: :Fire:

One thing I don't like about my Matchdots is they really eat up batteries quick. I don't know if it's a characteristic of that model. But after 3 good sessions they are on the highest setting and if you take a shot, leave it on and come back, it's dimmer. I never noticed that with the Ultradot 30 or 24. Oh well. Must be me. Anything I own gets put to use. I know how to give these products a good workout. [smilie=1:

Thats great to hear! I was a bit worried about shooting my 255 gr boolits in it as it states to only use 240 gr bullets in it. The fact that your useing 300 grainers is awsome!
So far from the bench this thing shoots like a rifle but I am still real close at 25 yds. But I am getting sub quarter sized one holers so far.
Thanks for the input!!!!!! ....Buck

Use a gas check design and you'll have no problem with cast boolits in the Desert Eagle. When you get back from the range and clean your Desert Eagle you let the gas channel soak in solvent overnight, use something like Ed's Red.
Do NOT use a plain base design. Do NOT use a tumble lube design. And do NOT use any kind of tumble lube (LLA or other). Also, the polygonal rifling likes hard bullets, so I use water quenched WW.

I regularly shoot the Lee C430-310-RF with a GC and lubed with Carnauba Red. For this I use 14.5gn Vihtavuori N105 which gives me 1360fps out of the 12" barrel and 1215fps out of the 6".

I have the original battery in my Ultradot 30 for more than four years now, and I use it a lot. I can't even tell you how many range sessions and hunts that unit has been on. I always carry spares but never seem to need them.

I have a back-up Leupold 4X I can use that clips right on. Or I could go out and buy more batteries. Batteries aren't cheap. It all adds up.

Go to Battery Bob online. Dirt cheap for a pile of them.
I think I am going on six years with the same battery. It is simple, you turn on the dot when you see a deer coming, shoot and turn the dot off.
Shoot some target, turn it off when not shooting.

The Matchdots really eat the power. Three sessions and it's time for a new battery. Battery Bob, eh?

I've had the same battery in my match dot for 2 yrs. even left it on over night once.
It was on low though and the small dot.
I use it on my air pistol all winter and then on to my tree rat pistol.
I love it a will be adding at least 2 more.
It might be going though - I never use to have to go higher than 5 no matter how bright out - but have been to 7 a couple of time lately.

Frank, do you trun it off during reloads, target changes, etc.?

Yup. Every time. Two matchdots. They're a decent company though. They honor their warranty without a bite. Leupold isn't so good on that end anymore. They peddle Chinese goods and are getting corporate and stingy.

Well we sure woke up a quiet thread, didn't we? And we are learning something new. Try to learn something new every day. Don't be too stuck on the same thing, is what I say.

Slightly off topic but I don't believe that the variable dot size in the Match Dot makes any change to the actual LED inside. I am pretty sure that the various dot sizes are achieved by putting a mask with progressively smaller holes in front of a single LED.

That is true. The Match Dot Whit had here only went down to a 4 minute dot and all the larger sizes were for speed and plate shooting so I see no need for it for general target or hunting.
Might be one more thing to fail.
Now if it went down to 1 minute it would be just what I need, then go up a little for deer.

Must have been an older model. Mine does 2, 4, 6, & 8 MOA.

I prefer the 2 MOA dot for hunting. Aim small, miss small.

Me too! :groner:
I took them apart and steel bedded the prism back in. The cheap Chinese glue broke loose. A rubber strap wrench works great to unscrew the things. The cheap ones are not sealed enough to worry about and I have never had one fog up.

Darn, it looks like popularity is raising prices.
