I was cleaning the garage today and found a battered bucket full of what appears to be a very hard lead alloy of some sort. Someone had given the stuff to me years ago and I forgot all about it, but here's the thing.......I suspect it's a high quality babbit metal, not only because of its hardness but because it's in the form of cubes that look like they came from a machine of some sort.

I'd like to get a scientific analysis before I just smelt it down for boolit material, as I restore old engines and good bearing material would be a Godsend. Is there someplace I could send a sample and get it tested? Any fee would be worthwhile just to know what it is! Thanks in advance......:-)

Lets see a picture of those cubes. I bet someone here knows where it came from.

I think Roto Metals does this, at least I have heard they do. Check with them.

Thanks guys. Being digitally challenged I can't post photos, but I'll get in contact with RotoMetals on Monday.

Most large recycle places (scrap yards) have a way to detect whats in the scrap they buy.
Babbit like any alloy can be made, by adding the right metals in a melt.

If the little cubes have letters on them, then it sounds like monotype.
Monotype has 9% tin, 19% antimony, 72% lead.
