I've got an 8mm Mauser with the barrel shortened to 22 inches. I'm loading 30.5 gr of IMR 3031 behind the LEE 175 gr cast boolit. Can anyon give me a guesstimate on muzzle velocity?

Sam, the best way to guesstimate your velocity without physical trajectory experience is to look at loading manuals. Find a cartridge with the same load, say using a 170 grain 8mm projectile with 30-31 grains of 3031. That looks like a fully loaded 32 WS, so I would choose that cartridge. The rule to remember is that there is so much energy in that powder being applied to that same object. ... felix

I you are not using a filler of any sort then it is probably 1750 - 1900 fps. There's really too many variables there to "guestimate" any closer. Only a good chronograph will know for sure:-)

Thank you both for your replies. I'm looking for a good 100 yd and under deer load. This one is very accurate and if the velocity guess is any where in the ballpark I think it will suffice. I don't have access to a chronograph.

I'd say around 1800fps.

I have a 24" brl 8mm, with 30gr of IMR3031 and about 200gr boolit, it clocks at 1788fps or so.

Here is my 100yd target with said load.

You should have a very good deer round there. I dropped a doe at 160 yds last fall with my 30-06 and the 311284 (wt of 226gr) and it clocked at 1850 fps. The 8mm is just a bit more of a good thing. I'm taking mine out this fall to wack a deer with it. :D

Blammer,
That 200 gr sounds like a killer load. Thanks for the info. Good luck this fall!!
