The surplus site has a couple auctions under way, of manageable weights of brass in Oklahoma. Current bids are where even scrap price would pay out for you. You may want to look in on these.

As of 8:15 Eastern Coast Time it's:
Lowest You May Bid: 3,733.00 US$ (per lot)

Description:
2,441 lbs (approx) once fired military brass 5.56mm. Mutilation not required. Weight includes pallet and box.

Almost cheaper to buy scrap metal brass from the scrap yard.

That's for the 5.56 brass.

The other item is:
2,900 lbs (approx) once fired military brass 7.62mm blanks. Mutilation not required. Weight includes pallet and box.

Blanks have no useful purpose..................

For .223:
95.28 gr/ea
73.5 cases/#
13.6 #/1000

So if there is 2441 lbs of .223 brass, that means there is just shy of 180,000 cases in that lot.
The going rate is about $55 per 1000 (inc. shipping) or $44 without. Call it 4.5 cents each.
At that rate, you've got over $8000 worth of brass there.

Not bad at all...provided you can get it out of Oklahoma first.

it would be a lot of work, but could you cut the blank part off the 7.62X51 cases and have a salvageable case worthy of reloading?

You can, but it would be a lot of work for a lot that size. I would do it on a small scale though. There's something about turning scrap into something usable that makes it worth it.

I tried that once. One has to inside ream the neck or turn the outside of the neck.

hmmn... okay...I guess you would still have to deal with the crimped in military primers too, eh?

how much do you reckon the box and the pallet weighs?

20 pounds?

Well, dealing with the crimped primer is nothing compared with the rest. Just another step in a multi-step process. Not too onerous with a small number of cases - I've made 200 7.62 Nagant cases out of .223 brass. I'd not want to do thousands unless I found a reasonable way to automate the process. Or had nothing but lots and lots of time with nothing else to do!
