My Bushmaster 450 reloads stick hard when I cycle a round. My cases are 7-8 thousands larger at the base of the boolit than factory loads. I'm full sizing and using Hornady dies. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

My first thoughts are

Bullet dia
What dia boolit are you using ?
Factory is .451 or .452 I believe

Case thickness
Factory brass or cut down 284 brass
If 284 brass , might need to ream the ID

I'm using factor brass and Hornady 250 FTX bullets. out of frustration, I gently re-sized my brass in my 45-70 die and the numbers work out well and chamber perfectly. I think I may have a bad die. I wrote Hornady to see what they say, at least now i have a work around and I'm back in business.

Thanks for the post,

I went to the range and shot a very nice group at 100dys. Not a single problem with any of the reloads. I talked to Hornady, but they still think it is my reloading and not the die. I've tried everything I can to reduce the shell size and nothing works but running the brass into the 45-70 die. So far I seem to be the only one having this problem.

Is it larger before you seat the bullets if so it sounds like your die isnt sizing all the way down the case. Id think it is the dies fault.

You might just be crimping too hard. I don't know squat about the 450, but I used to load the 50 Beowulf. I wanted a GOOD crimp because, quite frnakly my reloads were brutal. I found the same problem...... I was buckling the case from crimping too much. Try to slide a resized case in the chamber before you load it.

+1, try to load a sized unloaded case, if it goes in just fine then your problem is not with the die.

There has been a lot of talk about crimping over at 450bushmaster.net.

I'd go over there and check out a few of the crimping threads. There are 3 sticky threads on crimp dies at the link below.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not following up. It has been a great summer for shooting. It is the Die plain and simple. The resized unloaded shells are to big to fit in the chamber without sticking hard. Hornady stopped responding and since I have a work around, I have nor bothered to replace it and since I am only putting 50 or so rounds an month through it, I can live with it. It is still a blast to shoot and now I am working on cast bullets for plinking and Hornady's for hunting.
