I am new to casting and just smelted down 500 lbs of ww. I ordered my first mold from midsouth TL401-175 SWC. On midways sight is says they are for tumble lube. My question is if i pan lube are the lube ridges to small to hold the lube on after being pushed out of the lube or is tumble lubing just the best method for this type of boolit? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

nevermind. Read ramparts thread on tumble lubing and decided that it would be much easier with equall results to tumble lube.

Some say it is a squirrelly round to try and both cast for as well as reload for.

I don't know, personally, as I do not own a .40 and have zero desire to own one. Every time I think about maybe picking one up, I'll shoot one of my friends' .40, and that usually convinces me for at least a year or more. :)

Lot of pressure pushing that round. I probably read more questions and posts of anguish about leading in the .40 than all other calibers combined. Size is critical. Lube is critical. Load is critical.

Trick will be to get feedback from the .40 shooters, reloaders and casters we have here that have it figured out--THEY'RE the ones you want to listen to. And believe me--we have some folks here who have it down to both a science and an art.

I never found the 40 to be much of a problem to cast or load for. I seldom tumble lube as I don't like that messy stuff. I lube in my lubricator-sizer. I prefer shooting either my 10 mm, a 45 or one of the 44's. I prefer to use plain ole air cooled wheelweights.

Have fun with this stuff.

I have the conventional lube grooved version of that boolet. I have tumble lubed and conventional lubed them with out much issue. Only problem I found was that I HAD to size to .401 and not use them as cast in MY gun. Anway I found a load of Titegroup that operates the pistol and went with it. I had about 400 rounds on it before the last cleaning. No leading with the aftermarket Glock Wolf barrel and TL.
Off topic but I lube this boolet with Lyman Super Moly and then swage it to make a 44 cal HP. That shoots well out of my Redhawk 44 mag with a reasonable charge of 700X.

Back to the .40.... I qualified for work with this boolet and titegroup in my pistol so it shoots well enough for me. I can keep all my rounds on a 6" steel plate out to 25 yards or so. Good enough for me.

Thanks for the input guys. I am new to reloading as well as casting so it sounds like i have some experimenting to do.

agree with cwme about the lee mold. for the 10 mm or 40 s&w. but i only do old fashion lube with a star sizer. Have used xlox or alox sold all but one Tumble lube mold and will sell that when i find time to clean. . donated leftovers to gun club to sell.

I tumble lubed my 40's with no problems. I believe with the same mould also. The bigger issue is proper fit. I shot mid range also and didn't want to push lead too hard in the 40 beings there is so much problems you hear of in the 40 and being a high pressure round.

I shot a bunch if these in the past out of my Glock 22 with the stock barrel and little trouble. I always stayed around the starting charge. At the time I was using Winchesters AutoComp.

I am about to get back at it with a newer Glock 22 and some Unique or PowerPistol with starting charges.

I have rubbed 50/50 from White Label on the grooves to test it out, but didn't notice any vast improvements.

I have that mold. It has had the bevel base removed to the first groove. Drops at 158 gr.
Accurate but with flyers. Like Recluse said, .40's can be tricky. Keep the powder charges toward the start side. In my opinion, and this is my loads only, the 175 gr and heavier boolits are best for the 10 mm's. I prefer the 155 gr. area.

I would like to try the standard groove 175 gr. with the bevel base removed.

i have a few Lee TL's i like them very much I also have a few traditional styles. I pan lube them. it is so much faster to TL with Johnsons Paste wax since i shot under 1000FPS pistol loads. For GC versions I use Lee( LLA)

Miha's 40-160 HP (155 gr 80/20) shoots fine in my G27. 6.0 Win Autocomp, CCi primer. Have to seat deep (1.100") full diameter (.401) has to be in case to work. No leading with 50/50 alox.

+1 on recluse's comments. No .40/no desire/ it is high pressure/ may be a problem/ give
it a try.

Been casting and loading for my .40 for quite some time. Never once have I run into a problem with it. I'll admit I really haven't done a lot of playing around with different loads, the one I started with is really a sweet shooter--so I didn't see the point in screwing it up. I'm using 180gr. TC from straight ww alloy, air cooled or water-dropped makes no difference, tumble lubed with LLA cut about 15% with mineral spirits (yes, that is a standard lube mold that I tumble lube), size at .401, load over 4.4gr Red Dot. Runs like a champ.
