G'Day All
I was thinking about when you chamber a round. In my PPC I would seat the bullets long and engrave them on closing the bolt. Seemed to agree with the gun and it shot like stink. SO why can't seating long and using a cartridge seater to engage the rifling on a 1885. Would work with other guns obviously. It would also give a bit more compression.
Anyway it is just a idea that's rattling around in my head at the moment but I may give it a try.

It would also give a bit more compression.
If your load normally uses a fair bit of compression, the powder column will be pretty solid when you set out to engrave that 'long' seated bullet.
Using the bullet to compress the powder is something most of us work to avoid ... and certainly wouldn't use it to increase compression on an already packed column.

Light engraving of a 'soft' bullet is possible without a cartridge seater, and that is what most of us plan on.

Thanks
Just a thought as I'm about to start with BPCR and wish to learn what I can.

Good morning
My Rollingblocks are all figured to have the boolit engaging the rifling on loading. My rollers shoot better and the powder burns a touch cleaner.
My browning made 1885 38-55 also benefits from the same procedure. But try it both ways. You just never know about some combinations...

Juddy, I also do as posted above.
I have a Uberti Hiwall in 45-70. It will not shoot tight groups unless the boolit, a 457125 is engaging the rifling upon chambering.

I use a tapered boolit that actually sits up in the bore, with the second last driving band engraving lightly. If the fouling is hard, it can be a little tricky geting it in there, but it is the best way I have found so far.
