Gentlemen,

Is anyone else using IMR-4895 (canister or surplus) in the 223 with Jword bullets? If so, what have your results been?

I have been using H4198 in my RRA AR-15 with 55gr Winchester FMJ BT bullets, but today I thought I'd try some 4895 since I have a few pounds of it now. I checked a few manuals and ended up loading 26.0grs with the 55gr bullet. I hope to shoot some groups tomorrow if the weather will co-operate.

I shoot 24.5gr of 4895 in my NEF Handi Rifle (.223) under a Hornady 55gr Soft Point.

I am getting an average of 3000fps and it will shoot into .5 to .75 of an inch at 100 yards.

I like slower powders rather than faster ones.

I've used 25 gr of milsurp 4895 in LC88 cases with a 69 mk for 2936 fps out of Colt Comp AR with 1-9" twist. 24 gr of H4895 with the same bullet ran 2741 fps for 10 shots which went into 2.5" at 200 yards prone with sling. My notes show in '74 I was getting 3240 fps with the Hornady 55 SX over 26 gr of H4895 out of my M700V with 1-12" twist.

4895 is a good powder for the little 223. I used a good bit of it last year for my first High Power season in a 20" AR with 52-60 gr pills in Reduced course matches( 24-25 grs.) they are fairly mild loads but I'm only shooting 200 yds., Had good results with it,but had better with Reloader 15 with the 60 grainers and heavier. One point shy of Master class. average for the season:-D ! so yes 4895 works well!

Singleshotbuff,

I have shot several pounds of IMR-4895 in .223 with 69 to 80 gr bullets (jacketed) in a Rock River AR-15 and it shoots great. I dind't see much difference in performance between IMR-4895, Varget, and RE-15.

My Howa likes milsurp 4895 and condom bullets. I'd go back in and get the data, but a guest is sleeping in there right now..

I was just going to try some in the Mini-14.

That's the powder I use in everything.
I went thru that ordeal of a different powder for every bullet for a few yrs.
Never had what I wanted, but, had several shelves full of half full can's of fifty diff
powders.

Finally just gave up the battle, used it up gradually and stuck with 4895 for everything from .223/25gr/55,40's, to .375H&H and am happy as hell with the results.

Last night I was looking thru the new IMR and Hodgedon's manuals for '06.
They both cover the fact 4895 is about the best there is for a little better than average velocity for everything. Seems like they list if for Hornets thru 416's.

Far as I'm concerned, IF the powder companies recommend it that way, you can't go wrong by following the suggestions and avoid/end the hassles. makes life so much easier to put up with.

Only thing I don't use it for is handguns and would there too IF it was possible. Went to Red Dot for all the cast loads and H110/4227 in 45 Colt and .30 carbine.

That's a whole lot easier to live with only three powders than it was with over fifty.

That's why I bought some in mil surp. It's probably the most versitle single powder for my rifles, and guess what? It shoots accurate in all if them so far.. :drinks:

Leaves a few kernals in the bore, but that doesn't bother me when you see the tight groups it produces.

Damn off the shelf gunstore powder us to damn expensive in my neck of the woods
also..

imr4895 25.4 gr
mix cases
remington primers
55gr FMJ seated to canalure (sp?)

i've shot hundreds of these with good results out of a bushy nm 20 in upper that i shoot in hi-power. im not a very good shot so i couldn't really give you much in the way of groups, but it cycles well and can outshoot me :)
