Is there anyone who is doing this? I have a Marlin 336 that needs an octagon barrel really bad. Ok, not really, but I'm hoping to find someone who can do a 24-26 inch cowboy conversion for me.

I totally missed the boat when Marlin was actually doing this.

I had marlin do it for me several years ago. I sent them a 336 amd had them put on a 38-55 CB barrel/ magazine and new wood to match. I don't know for sure but I may have the only pistol grip stocked CB rifle in existence. At the time is was only about double what just a factory rebarrel ran.

Got one in the shop now that I installed an octagon barrel on. It's not a hard job but a little time consuming over most bolt action jobs. The barrel has some cuts on the chamber end and there are 4 dovetails to cut and a groove on the bottom for the mag tube.

Why not sell the 336 and buy a lever like the 92 or one of the Uberti 1866 or 1873 toggle bolt guns? The 92 may be purchased for $500 or so and with some work turned into a very nice gun to shoot SASS with. Most shooters who have not shot any matches don't think about the use of a rifle with the 24 inch octagon barrel and that is they are very heavy. The Marlins are good rifles but have a problem in that they are set up to throw your brass to the front right of the shooter. This puts the brass past the firing line and you may not retrieve it. If you are shooting 38 spl. then they are cheap to replace but not so if shooting 38-40 or 44-40 or 45 Colt. I shot a Marlin when I first started and when you receive one piece of brass out of 10 then it becomes upsetting to say the least. Good Luck

I never though about the angle of ejection.
I suppose this is another of those sport specific needs. Interesting.
I like my Marlin cowboy in 45 Colt. That 24 inch barrel just hangs right for me.
I don't shoot cowboy competition but the extra barrel length just feels better to me.

I have a friend that was a engineer at Marlin take my 1970's 1894 in 357mag with out the new cross bolt safety and make a 38spl Cowboy gun with pistol grip. Marlin made the 1894 in 41mag with a pistol grip so the trigger group, lever and stock were already stock items for the conversion.

I have two CB models with a 24 inch barrel. The 30-30 is just plain a better cartridge in that configuration and the rifle holds better. My Rossi in its 20" configuration isn't all bad either. My Marlin in 32-20 is better.

I own a few Marlins and shoot em all in competition - silhouette matches. None spit out the brass forward, or onto my hat (like a Winchester).

I had two of the Cowboy Conversions done to 336 Texans I had, one in 30-30 the other in 38-55. I'm mighty pleased with the results. I'd be mighty interested in finding someone that is doing the conversions as I have another I'd like to convert to a 38-55 Cowboy rather than just bore it out.

Marlin will do the converesion if it's a late enough gun. Give them a call for specifics.

I was under the impression that you were looking for a rifle that you could use in SASS matches. When posters started saying the 30-30 was a better cartridge, then I said to myself that maybe you were looking for a rifle with the old style look only and not for SASS. Those rifles for main match use are limited to hand gun cartridges only. I did not dial into the correct satellite.

Irascible, I do not believe Marlin is doing the changes since Remington bought them.

Doc,
Remington was doing them until they closed the New Haven CT plant. I got one of the last 38-55's. GeorgeKY got THE last 30-30 CB and a beauty is was....

The rifles I got back was a splendid example of American workmanship over multiple generations. The 60's and 70's generation Texans came back as wonderful 2009 Cowboys.

It would take a ransom to pry these away.

i don't think he's wanting to have it rebored, i think he's looking for a gunsmith to install an octagon barrel. and 30-30 octagon barrels and hard to find unless you have one made. Green mountain makes different one's, but i have'nt seen one in .30 cal.

I usually do the octagon here but lately I recaived 7 octagon barrels from McGowen and I am pleased with the work that was done. The Green mountain barrels I get need a lot of draw filing to get them smooth, not so with the McGowen barrels.

Whit,

FYI...
Rebarrel jobs not done by the factory....are not legal for NRA Silhouette Matches. Liners & rebore are OK.

Jon,
I did not know that. Luckily both mine were done at the factory.
