It was in the window of the Gun Library.......Once they pulled it out and put it in my hands, it was like a puppy in an 7 year o0lds arms!

1874 Sharps in 45-70..........

It will play nice with my recent 1885 Winchester High Wall in the same caliber...Now all I need is a Rolling Block and a Springfield Trap Door and life will be complete!

Who made it and how much was that doggie in the window?

I have no idea who made it. It was a used gun. All it says is Cabelas, Sydney Neb on the barrel. Doesn't even list the caliber. I would guess it's a Pedersoli.....

I stole it..........[smilie=1:

I take it back, under the barrel, extremely faintly, you need to hold it in strong light to see, it says "Pedersoli, 45-70, Made in Italy"...........(just like my father!)

I didn't know Cabela's offered such things under their own name-
Been thinking about a Sharps or clone thereof, but every time I get close, I find myself with another 1885 Win in my hands, and I'm done for--

Yep, they do. I bought my 1874 Pedersoli Sharps from Cabelas at Christmas time, 2009. It is an excellent shooter. In fact, mine is identical to the one the OP has although mine is marked clearly with both Pedersoli and Cabela's names.

Go to the Cabela's web site and search for "Pedersoli". A couple of guns will come up along with sights and other accessories.

Same thing happened to me around Christmas time last year so I ended up with another 2874 Sharps by Pedersoli. Mine shoots well (actually better than I can shoot anymore) and it is well made too. It is not as nice as my Shiloh or C Sharps rifles but then it cost me about a grand less than those rifles go for today.

Now add a lee shaver globe w/level front site & a MVA mid-range venier rear with a hadley eye cup & we'll have twins, LOL. This is the one my wife got me for x-mas in '09.

Was the price ...
A. Less than $900 (a theft of this seriousness this would would require knuckle rapping)?
B. Less than $600 (qualifies as 'high crimes and misdemeanors' and subject to thirty days in the electric chair)?

Cabela's calls that their Hunter rifle. It was listed at 900 then they marked them down to 800 and now back up to 1100.
Judging from the one I handled in the Sidney store last year, its a sort of a knock off of Shiloh's roughrider.
It should make a pretty fair general purpose rifle.

Not long before Christmas, 2009, Cabela's put them on sale for $800. That's when I got mine. This past January I used it in our first ever official "Buffalo" Match on our new 350 yard range and placed first. It's a well-made rifle that should be around for generations.

Got out to the range today............

RL7 under a 420g Ranch Dog with GCs and Lee Tumble Lube.........10 shots at 100yds from a bean-bag rest with crappy Buck-Horn sights....

That first low shot is with a clean, oily barrel

Put some decent sights on it and you'll have a SHOOTER!! Barring the cold bore shot, that's a nice group..... about 1 1/2 inches I'm guessing.

Hey Roy,

That Pedersoli Sharps would really look nice with a period-style Malcolm scope setting on top.

Wayne, this Sharps will be a walk-around hunting rifle. I'm ordering the Shiloh, barrel mounted ladder type sights......

http://www.shilohrifle.com/images/100sight.jpg

This type of sight should be perfect for a fall Montana hunt for Speed-Goats....

But I now want vintage glass for the Winchester 1885.

I was in a gun shop in PA last week and he had two Unertl scopes that were like new. Both 20X.....one was a 1" tube and the other the 3/4". Both with adjustable objective and both with precision Unertl mounts.

Do you have any experience with these?

Roy,

My somewhat limited experiences with period-style BPCR scopes has been with two Fecker and one Leatherwood brand in lengths of 18 to 23". All are or were 3/4" scopes with eyepiece and objective lense housings of 1" or less because anything larger would not qualify for NRA sanctioned silhouette competition. Also, the rear mounts on these scopes did not have click adjustments, which is not allowed by the NRA. For more details on my research and experiences with period-style scopes go to the following articles:
http://www.texas-mac.com/Searching_for_a_Cost_Effective_BPCR_Scope_Solution .html

http://www.texas-mac.com/Fecker_Scope_Adjustments_and_Minor_Repairs.html

There are several guys over on the ASSRA forum that can address any question you might have on the higher power and heavier scopes you mentioned much better than I can.

Sigh.........

One of these days. Someday.

A Billy Dixon model, in 50-90. From a collection of historical documents, that seems to be the most agreement on the caliber/charge he used.

I grew up about 30 minutes drive from where Billy Dixon made the shot. Visited the sight many times, and still amazed when I look at that mesa out there, from where the shot was made.

Major $$$$, but the day I hold it, I will be just like a 7 year old again, with the puppy myself.
