I have an 1894 in 44mag that I want to put a scope on. I have a S&W red dot scope that is not being used, that I would like to stick on the marlin just to try out.

Maybe a red dot sight is an anachronism on a lever gun... but I'm not into the cowboy stuff and all.

Don't know much about scope bases and such, so looking for some pointers on what kind of base I need. The red dot sight was formerly mounted on a flat top AR.

Most red dots have Weaver type mounts so finding one should not be a problem. Weaver makes an inexpensive aluminum base and Millet and others make steel ones. They all just screws down on the top of the receiver using the factory holes.

ok, thanks. I'm at work so I didn't have the gun in front of me when I posted. Was pretty sure the rifle already had the holes for mounting. Will check out the Weavers and others. Hopefully the local Academy or Sportsmans Warehouse has these bases.

Weaver 63B will fit the 1894, 336, and 1895. I have used Weaver products since about 1963 and have never been disapointed. -JDL

Bender,
Don`t fret the use of the red dot on your lever. I mounted one on a friends W94AE Carbine in 44Mag. The rear scope base is a bit odd....due to the AE design..., but once zeroed, it proved to be as much fun on 200yd steel as my 336 .444 that trashed more than one El Paso vintage Weaver. The dot tends to make target acquisition a bit easier when you hand it to a new shooter, especially the younger ones. It`s a hoot to watch them when they connect on target at that kind of distance. You can immediately tell they "get it".

I have one which I intend to use for cowboy action, occasional hunting and range plinking and cast boolit development. Can detachable mounts such as Leupolds allow you to use the open sights when you take the scope off?

On my Marlin 1894 CL rifles, the use of a Redfield or Leupold scope base requires removal of the factory buckhorn rear sight. I also wish that Williams would purpose-build a base for their WGRS sights to fit the 1894 Marlins. The 336/444/1895 sights don't work.

I saw this mounting system on the Beartooth Bullets Website and tried it out on my Marlin 336 Zane Grey 30-30. I liked it so much that I install the same setup on all my Marlin lever guns.

This is a Weaver 63B base with the back end milled off to clear a Williams Fool Proof receiver sight.

The original front sight works fine with the receiver sight in most cases and It isn't necessary to remove the regular folding buckhorn sight. When the buckhorn iis folded down you don't see it through the peep anyway and you can set the buckhorn up for any distance you like and fold it up to check your receiver sight's zero settings.

For the 1894’s I mill the front of the 63B mount to provide an equal amount of material in front of and behind the scope mount for a balanced look then I drill and tap the receiver and mount a 36/94 fool proof sight.

The Weaver 4X4 scope mounts are very inexpensive if you're on a budget and hold well (mounted on the 44 Magnum 1894SS). For the heavy hitters I prefer the Leupold QRW or WARNE QD rings (mounted on the 444 Marlin).

I don’t hunt anymore and use the scopes for load development work and testing but the ability to remove the scope or dot sight and put it back on without losing zero is great, and the ability to move the scopes between the rifles without moving the rings is convenient.

The receiver sight is ideal for those plinking sessions and carrying the rifle at the balance point with the scope removed makes this system very versatile

Here's my 45-70.

Weaver 2 piece grandslam bases. leupold QR rings. 1.5 x 5 Varix-III. Returns to zero every time. Take her off and flip up your front site.

Now if I could just afford that large loop lever..

I've got my 336 set up like this also.. :drinks:
