I continued today testing my plain base SAECO # 315's.
A few weeks ago, I had Buckshot remove the g/c from one
of the cavities of a 2 cav. mold. The rear base band mikes .3125"

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=113325

All bullets were sized to .3115"
I fired 50 rounds today in 5 round lots " fishing " for the " right load " in my
VZ-24 Mauser , 308 Win., hvy barrel, flutted, stainless bench gun.
The rifle has a 1 lb. Timmney Trigger that is as smooth as glass.
Leupold 6.5 X 20 with A/O Vari X III Fine tapered cross hairs and a dot.
All shooting was done at 50 yards.
This is a real FUN rifle to shoot.

I continue to be impressed with International Clays with my
many different .30 cal. plain based designs fired in both the
308 Win. and the 30 - 06.

Some of the 5 shot groups today were stellar, some didn't shoot worth a cuss ! !

Of course, Alliant Unique isn't too shabby either.

As always, nice shooting!

Who made your barrel? Did you build the rifle yourself? Nice looking rig.

Harold Tyus in Golden,CO does all my metal work. Harold built this rifle. I did the stock work which includes glass bedding , pillars, and free floating of the barrel. The rifle is about 15 yrs. old. This is an Adams and Bennett barrel, F-54 contour with flutes, stainless steel. A real nail driver. Harold held chamber dimensions and head space super tight on this one.

I can't ever see myself replacing this barrel, it just shoots too well for that. Shooting cast bullets, it should last many lifetimes. I don't have too many rifles in my safe that can actually shoot better than I can, but this one is an exception. It can easily shoot much better than I can ! !

I love 315 in 308. I have shot many in my M1A Loaded powered with 21.5 to 22.5 grains of 2400 with outstanding accuracy and function.

Your rifle is a true beauty.

:hijack:When you mentioned F-54 contour I was wondering if it was an AB barrel. I have been hemming and hawing on a Mauser build with an AB barrel. Good to know that they do in fact shoot well.
I went with a Shaw barrel on my latest Savage build and I am very impressed.

Having a rifle that can shoot better than you can is a wonderful thing.

Anyway, nice rig and nice shooting!

My gunsmith, Harold Tyus has very high regard for A & B barrels. He has barreled many hundreds of rifles with A & B barrels. He is sold on them. He barreled a 1909 Argentine 98' action for my friend in 7 X 57 mm with an A & B barrel, it is a nail driver.

For the price and your results I really can't see where a guy can go wrong with AB. Guess my next project should be to give them a try.

You don't hear the name Harold very often. My Grandpa was named Harold. First time I have heard of another one out there=)

Actually his name is Dr. Harold Tyus, he is a PHD and teaches fishery at the University of Denver.

I do believe he knows more about Mauser rifles than anyone I've ever met.

Take it out to 100 and 200 yds give it a try. If it works go to a CBA match and get your name in the Fouling Shot. JerryW

Jerry W :

My initial plans were to develop an accurate , inexpensive ( with no g/c ) .30 cal load that would be easy and quick to assemble and use this load to train my grandson as he graduated from rim-fire up to CF rifles.
All this has exceeded my expectations ( which is good ).

I may just move on out to 100 yds. and see what these loads will do ? ?
