There was a discusson about geting 1in14 250-3000 to shoot and I can't find it here . I am happy to report that my my 250-3000 with it's 1in 14 did well with 100gr hornady J-words and 39 gr of H4350 , about 1.5 " . not the magic minute of angle but that will work for hunting :-)

87s are the ticket. faster the better. 100s will work if you use a shorter blunter one and push it hard.100 grain Bullets like corelocks interlocks ect work better then sierra and ballistic tips that are longer and sleaker.

Lloyd nailed it. I haven't bothered fooling with 100's in the .250 for years. 87 grainers kill deer deader than dead, and if I'm gonna chase an animal that takes more than that to kill it, I'll reach for a heavier caliber anyway.

87 grainers would be great but they seem to be a rare item around here , but if I ever find some without having to get into import /export permits to order them from down south I am going to hoard as many as I can get , and I wouldn't personally recomend it but moose have been taken in this area with 250-3000 what bullet weight I have no idea

Ditto on what Lloyd said. I could never get any other thing to shoot as well as the 87 grain Hornady in my Savage. I hope to test them on deer this fall.

Plater's experience and mine are Identical. The 87 grain Hornady is the best grouping bullet in my rifle, by a considerable margin. I haven't tried any boolits in it yet, I have too many other things to try first in too many other guns, but I plan on getting around to it eventually.

I must be luckier than most with my Sav 99 x 250, vintage 1930 with 1-14" twist. Flatbase j-words of 100 grains do well for me--close to 2700 FPS using WW-760. Castings do well also, the NEI 100 grain RG-4 lookalike does very well at 1700 FPS.

Like 9.3x62AL's my old 99 shot 100 grs very well, hornadys, but best loads where Speer 100's. They are a little shorter for the weight. Building a no-drll mount for the one I have now, might finish it one day lol. Go back to jan 2010, the info your looking for may be in my post when I got this one.

Well if you're shooting 1 1/2" at 100 meters there isn't much going wrong.

I used to have a 1-12" twist 243 win. When I tried to long a bullet it would shoot four inch groups.

I had a 250-3000 custom 98' Mauser once that had a 1-14 twist barrel in it. It shot 100 gr. spire pts. and 120 gr. Sierra HP's " as wild as the wind."

Drop down to a Hornady .25 cal., 87 gr. spire pt, and it became a very accurate rifle.

the two lighter bullets ive had the most experience with on deer are the 87 sierra and the 85 speer. Both are very accurate in my winchester bolt with a 1-14 twist. Both do very well on deer sized game too.

I have a 1920's era Savage 99 in 250-3000. I am trying to develop an accurate load using IMR 3031 under the Speer 87 grain HotCor, but have not had much luck so far. I've not progressed very far past starting loads yet.

Would someone like to suggest another powder to try for load development?

H 4350 worked great for me , might be a bit slow for 87 grainers but it will still give respectable velocity
