View Full Version : Hundred yard range

I finally figured out a place to shoot a hundred yards on my property. No clue why I didn't see this before. I've walked it a hundred times over and it never occurred to me. I guess it was just one of the "V-8" moments.

The line of fire drops off about 10 feet. That's only a 3% grade, so I figure that's negligible. I can drive between the target board and bench in the truck, too. We like that!

HERE'S THE PHOTOS. (http://fgsp.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/hundred-yard-range/)

The grade does not matter per se. It's the number of yards to your target from the muzzle that counts. If one of your steps makes one yard, the number of steps to your target is the number of yards. The objective is to measure the amount of time the projectile sees gravity within any ballistic calculation. ... felix

Felix, I shot the target board from the shooting bench with a laser range finder. Shot it 6 times to make sure I got a good, accurate reading. All 6 times, I got 102 yds.

Very nice Jim. I could only wish one day that I will be able to find me a piece of land that I can shoot on without having to visit the range. Congrats on finding yourself 100 yard distance to shoot....

You have a 102 yard range, Jim! ... felix

Actually, I can move the bench from right in front of the target board all the way back to about 125 yards. At 125, you can just barely see the target board over the grade where it starts to drop off.

That won't do Jim, you'll have to move that tree two yards closer :)...Ray

Little work with a dozer and your fixed - I need to find a place like yours or even a little more range.

I'll get a price on that and let you know how much you need to make the check out for.

Ray, would it be alright if I just move the bench or the target board two yards closer? [smilie=1:

There is something more than self sufficiency satisfaction in having your own range but I wonder how long the tree will last as a back stop, or is the board against the tree for illustration.
Nice find and on your own place as well.

Jim, just get a longer gun barrel to cancel out the extra two yards. But remember powder burns on the target look suspicious so don't make it too long:kidding:.

From my site post (http://fgsp.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/hundred-yard-range/): "The pallet was used to get a distance with a laser range finder. I’ll build a target stand later."

it looks like you'll be shootin' across a drive way ???
I recall (months ago) that you mentioned you were in the middle of no where
and rarely had visiters....BUT, you still might like to put up
a flag or signs, indicating the Shootin' range it HOT !
just a thought.

Congratulations, Jim! Gentlemen, we have ignition.

I just got back from trying out a new bullet on the range. Gas checked 41 mag. It did well enough at 15 yards to take it up a notch. I shot 2 pig silhouettes at 50 meters, completely off the rack. I can't think of a better way to live, and might be totally unwilling to change.

I don't trust my foot steps or those of anybody else. I use a laser range finder and check it several times to be sure I've got a good reading.

If you live out in the country I'll bet you have a neighbor with a tractor with a scraper or other mechanized tool that can do for price of gas and a few hours of range time. :bigsmyl2:

Look for local resources for trap material

Dont shoot up that tree, have someone drop off a load of dirt for you. Lot safer as well.

My range is uphill, but IIRC, I read someplace that you don't have to worry about shooting up or down hill unless it figures out to be 7 degrees or more. My berm is 100 feet high!

mazo kid: you can always build an elevated shooting bench/reloading shack!

Just wondering here

what would everyone consider is the MINIMUM distance for a shooting range?

Doc Highwall
05-20-2011, 12:34 PM
Minimum distance will be dependent upon what you are shooting. I have a 10 meter range in my basement for air gun. If you are shooting 50' small-bore rifle or pistol 50'.
High-power I would not want anything less then 100 yards and that would be small-bore rifle match distance at the same time.

at my acreage, I have a safe location with about 70 yds. for most of my fun and testing I thought that would be a good start.

then I need to find 200 yds unimpeded.

I am just curious because I see the occasional thread where some have posted groups at 25 or 50 yds for HighPower Centerfire.

nanuk, if you want bragging rights, your target has to be far enough away so that you don't leave powder burns on the target :kidding:...Ray

I have this "range" that is 250 yds from start of lane to backstop or 350yards from just inside my shop door. I use the table saw as a bench when working on loads as loading is done in here also. I have a drive along the back field that is close to 800 yds and will be a range when I get backstop and shooting area set up. Range comes with target runner!
