Feel the need for 40 cal

Yep, had enough fun with the 458 category. Lookin at something in the 400-416. Something that will hurl a cast projectile with lots of umph, yet I'd like to stay away from a case thats as long as my lott, so I guess I'm looking at a slight neck. I dont mind doing a bit of cartridge conversion, so I'm ok with the obscure. Just curious what you's have had luck with in that caliber range?

I'm glad you mentioned the 400 whelan..Some call that the 40/06 to huh?. I was looking at it in the cartridge drawing book I have. I could build that on a mauser bolt action with a barrel swap huh? I thought of the 405, but unless I find it in an orig Teddy gun, uhuh. I wonder what kind of ponies their getting out of that 400? Hey bro do you have any lotts made by ruger? I was wondering if you wanted to try a handfull of those big pills I got cast ecspecially for ruger lott throats? Let me know if'n you do

This really brings up somewhat of a sore subject with me. I don't quite understand the gap that exists between the .35 and .44 calibers. Now I know people will chime in and mention the few that do exist, but I'm talking cast friendly, in an existing format, that you can scope. It'd also be nice to get it in a cast friendly barrel. It's a huge gap between the .375 Win. and the .375 H&H. Then you go straight to the .40 somethings. The only 40-65's etc. are single shots. I can't find a barrel maker offering the 405 Win. in anything but a 14" twist, just a tad fast for my liking, and I don't believe the 1885 Win. can be scoped, however for straight line penetration on african game, I get their point, however I'll never get there. Most of the necked up or down wildcats have necks that are definitely on the short side. I really wish Marlin produced their 1895 in 40-65 or 416 barnes. There's an abundance 0f .45's out there but I'd love a better BC and less punishment on this end. Once again I'm not going to africa or Alaska, just hunting something up to and including moose and black bear. I feel something in the .375 to .40 realm would be about right. I've thinking that a 375-06 imp may be the ticket, but about a couple grand to do it right in a custom. I've not seen many people echo these sentiments, so I thought I was the only one out here that felt this way about it. Anyway, enough crying in my beer,lol. Time to do the family Christmas thing. Ron, if you really want a .40 bore barrel, in a different twist rate. Contack Bauska Rifle Barrel CO, Kalispell, Montana. I'll pretty much guarantee Steve will make you one in any rate you want. And, if you would ask him, I believe he may have some of John Buhmiller's old African wildcat chambering reamers, if you care to be adventurous.

Check out : http://www.sskindustries.com/index.htm They have a lot of wildcats. They can make you a rifle that fires a .950" caliber bullet that weighs 3600 grains. Just over half a pound!

Ron D..........Try a CZ550 in 9.3X62 or a Husky 46,146 in 9.3X57 from www.tradeexcanada.com (http://www.tradeexcanada.com) .....Other factory rifles are the Ruger #1 in .405 Win. and you can import a new Win. 1895 TD or 1885 in .405 if you like....Check out US auction sites for the last two .405's...I don't know their twist rate........You should be able to scope the new 1885's I would think and for sure the Ruger#1.......
I feel the same way as you do about a medium cased .375.......but since none are offered in a factory rifle I went to the 9.3's........:)
After thought.....if you have your heart set on a .375-06 buy a CZ or other rifle chambered for a .35 Whelen or 9.3 and have Ron Smith bore it out to what ever twist you want...(you may have to set the barrel back a bit to rechamber).......lots of ways to skin this cat with out spending 2 grand.......

if planning is 1/2 the fun, then why not design your own wildcat forty while you are at it? 40-284 anybody? There is enough shoulder there...40-350R Mag...10mmX57? I have a CZ, well, actually two in 416 Rigby, very impressive with cast....how's about a 416-350R Mag, sort-of a 416 Rem Short Mag...416 SAUM?
Of course, you could always go the other direction. I am building a 550 Gibbs on a model 1934 Remington...Zimbabwe Cape Buffalo beware...the Ides of August, 2007.

Same case as a 45-70 ought to be a peice of cake. Might even be able to bore it and put in an sleeve if there is enough barrel. Just find one with shot out barrel. Should be able to do that for less than a K including buying the gun.

Nrut -- Yes I do make the cases out of .30-40 Krag brass (also .303 British works too). the .405 is not as bad as you might think.....with the 300 grain bullets. With 370 grain bullets, it does kick a might....

Charger -- I don't use factory stocks (don't really care for them). I use the Pachmayr Gripper with the TC Ryanite forend, and have no problems at all.

I too had the urge for something 40'ish some time ago. I already have a couple of 45-70's, one a Marlin CB and the other a short barrel, peep sight, Parkerized Siamese Mauser. (I really love this one).

Anyhow, I had an extra Interarms Mauser in 30-06 and decided to rebarrel it in .416 Taylor. Put a Boyds laminated stock and a Leupold 4x scope on it. Cast some RCBS-416-350FNGC boolits and had a great time with it.

I resize .458 Win brass and played with several powders. So far Varget works pretty good, giving me around 1600 fps and 2' groups.
