Okay, forgive the continued questions about .308 and powders. I've got a pound of AA1680, not sure why it's there, still sealed. Wondering if there is a use for this in my .308 Win? Looking to shoot 311041 and RD 165-311-RF as well as 311299 and 311290 (170 and 200 gr. boolits). It looks like I should be in there with the 4227 and RL7 in terms of burning rate. Comments? Uses?

Well I use 680 surplus (kissing cousin to AA1680) but I use in smaller cases like 300 whisper and 7.62x39.

I'm a bit uneasy with the use of ball powders in reduced cast bullet loads in rifle cases like the 30-06 and 308 Win.

I've read far too many warnings about the use of reduced loads with ball powder.

I'm of the opinion that ball powder is at its best when there is high load density. When you've got a lot of empty space in a case like the 06' or 308 and are using ball powder, I think this spells trouble. Of late, I've tried WC844 and WC846 in my 308 Win. with cast bullets in the 170 gr. weight range. I'm experiencing " hang fire " ignitions.

As for me, I'd head more in the direction of the extruded powders....... IMR 4198, IMR - 4227, IMR - 4895, etc.

Would dacron help ball powder load density issue?

I don't know, Larry seems to be the local authority on using dacron. He may be able to shed some light on this ?

i haven't tried aa-1680 in my 308 but have in the 0-6. no filler.
and large rifle primer.
1680 is slower than 4227.
but it did ignite pretty readily.
i have only shot it in colder weather and have no comment on hotter than 20* temps.
it was however extremely accurate.
filler is best suited to slightly slower powders than aa-1680.

if i were to try it in a 308 i'd try 20 grs ish.
