Has anyone heard of this cartridge, or had any experience with it? I came across this link tonight and thought I'd share.

Yeah I've heard of it.

Not much more I can say though.

hmm... i wonder if the 7.62x39 would fit in it... kinda like what the russians did with their "51 cal" heavy machine gun round.

If not, this gun is worthless.

Looks almost like a 30TCU, which is the 223 necked up to 30 caliber. Article says it is a "lightly" trimmed 223. Must be slightly shorter case so the longer bullet will make it end up at an OAL that will feed thru the Ar.

Looks like my 30-223 sillywet XP-100. Ballistic equivalent of the 30 Herret, 308x1.5, 8mmKurz, &cetera. And is making me think about getting a black gun, something I haven't done yet...

Echo, I resisted until last year, one of my sons is one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children and he decided he and I should build one. It has become one of my favorite firearms, it is very fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate.

I'll keep the 7.62x35 or 300 BLK that 82airborne here on the forum is building for me. It is a SAAMI spec cartridge while Wilson's 7.62x40 is another wildcat.

I love my 300 whisper.....200gr at 1400fps or 125gr at 2200fps, its a cast boolit shooting machine.

No, it won't. "Worthless" how? It does exactly what it was designed to do: give 7.62x39 performance (or better) while using cheap or free 5.56 brass, .308 bullets and standard AR bolt head, mags etc. instead of expensive reloadable 7.62x39 brass that doesn't last long because of its extreme case taper, requires special AR mags because of its extreme case taper, requires a special AR bolt head (that doesn't last long because of added bolt thrust caused by, you guessed it, extreme case taper), and uses .310 bullets instead of the standard .308.

FWIW 7.62x40WT left, 300 Whisper right.
Just got a barrel and dies from Wilson. What little I've fired the barrel it shoots extremely well. 5 hole touching at 50 yds with the first load I tried. To say I'm unimpressed with the dies however would be an understatement. First (and last) Hornady dies I've bought.

Sorry to bump such and old thread, but I'd like to ask in what ways you were unimpressed with the dies. Could you elaborate for us?

I'm considering getting a "black rifle", and the 7.62x40 has my eye since it seems it may be a boolit acceptable route.

I would like to see about it also as Wilson makes some nice 1:11 barrels. The Blackout 1: 7 seems fast for me.

For subsonic 1:8 or 1:7 is appropriate for the long projectiles that are required for subsonic. 1:11 is too slow to stabilize subsonic projectiles. If you have no need for subsonic then you do not need 1:8 or 1:7, but they are not too fast for the BO, they are just right for the purpose of the round, to shoot both subsonic and supersonic rounds.

the 7.62x40 would probably be better for shooting just supersonic. I have a 1:8 barrel and have no issues with subs or supers, it is very accurate.

Does anyone know where to find 7.62x40WT barrels, reloading dies, or chamber reamers for a Savage Axis bolt gun?

I'm wondering what would be the easiest (ie: cheapest) way to convert an Axis in .223 to 7.62x40WT... hence my question.

Reasons? Obtainable parent brass, plenty of .30 caliber molds, low recoil, cheap on powder, and powerful enough for deer or hogs (basically its on the same power level as 7.62x39).

Any help or leads on tracking down sources would be appreciated.

This round is the creation of Wilson Combat, you should talk to them. You should be able to ream a 300 AAC BO or 300 Whisper barrel for your savage however I do not know anyone that could provide the reamer. Again, a call to Wilson would be in order.

I've never understood why someone didn't take the Czech 7,62x45 cartridge and update it. Why invent new things when you could just work with what you have.

Proof that there is nothing new under the sun.
