I currently have a Ruger Buckeye Blackhawk in 10mm/38-40. I am thinking about having a mold cut for the 10mm. As I would like to buy a 610 some time in the near future as well, I would like to have the mold useable for it as well.

My thoughts are for basically a reduced version of the Ohaus 45-270 AR boolit. Basically a modified Keith with more of the boolit outside the case. Would like to do this to preserve case capacity with a heavier boolit. Like this one here-

My question is, how long of a nose can be fit into the 610 cylinder with a case length of .990? How long of a nose would you consider practical?

I currently have a 230 gr SWC mold in 10mm, but it has such a shot nose, that it limits case capacity quite a bit. I would like to get a SWC style that keeps the weight up and increases case capacity. The Ohaus design looks like a good candidate if I can shrink it to 215-220 gr and make it fit in the 10 mm cylinders. Any thoughts? Thanks much, Billy

I can say that I generally seat my bullets to 1.260" in my 610's and I still have room to spare if I wanted to seat them even longer. I could measure the cylinder with my long rounds seated and let you know how much more room I have if you like.

I would guess you could go to an OAL of about 1.500". Here is why I say that.

Lots of guys use the 610 as a base gun and have the cylinders reamed for 10mm Magnum. This has a case length of about 1.240". Add to that the about .250" that projectiles for .400 are meant to be crimped at, and I see a length of 1.500". Also, the N frame is the basis for the 41 Mag and 44 Mag. Those have a OAL of 1.610".

Hopefully a 610 owner can put the calipers on his and give us solid data.

Groo here
10mm is listed at 1.26 max length and 10mm mag at 1.61in...
Loading long in a 10mm case is ok to a point but I question
if it will work with this much difference. [.990 vs 1.298 in].
I did a quick and dirty with a 45 ar case and a 41 cal cast 285gr TC bullet [SSK]
There is a lot of lead outside and not much in--I wonder if you can get enough crimp
and case tension to use the slower powders needed to launch this weight [.22 in inside]?

1.668" MAX OAL with moon clip seated. about a tenth of an inch less if you don't count the moon clipped ammo. I use 40 S&W brass instead of 10 mm brass since it ejects a bit faster and has less wiggle when speedily reloading. I seat my 185 Long RN's to 1.260" and I could easily seat them longer.. by another ,408". Or one bullet diameter and a bit more.. that would be one long bullet...

Much appreciated! I doubt the boolit will be anywhere near that long, but it is nice to know where tha limits are. Thanks, Billy

And if you want a 610 in either the 3 7/8 or 6.5" of current model, you may want to get it now since they are not being offered for sale by S&W in the current catalog. Although since you are in the "free world" of the other states, used ones may not be all that rare.. When S&W made them available recently, I made sure to pick up one of each before they became unobtanium again.
