Is there a .401 180gr RN mold out there?? This bullit style is gaining popularity - I see a few companies offering them in cast now and Rainier just added them. How much should I expect to pay for a custom made mold?

I'm interested as well. I'll be keeping an eye on this one....

It is not exactly a RN design but the Mihec 401 throws a gorgeous 170gr RNFP boolit from straight WW and some tin. Lemme see if I can get a pic.

Doby45--

That IS a slippery, slick-looking 40 caliber design indeed.

I brewed up some RCBS 200 grain TCs a while back as BruceB Softpoints. I used Lyman #257420s in unalloyed lead as the donor slugs, and the rest of the shank was poured in 92/6/2 alloy. The donor slugs weighed ~75 grains, total weight came to 208 grains. The intent is to use these as hunting loads in my S&W 1026, and I used enough AA-7 to give them 1100 FPS. They've only gone afield a couple times, in a Zone where lead bullets don't threaten condor dietary habits (stupid prehistoric buzzards that they are).

This Mihec casting would be the shiznits for 40 S&W, and would duplicate my carry loads closely if run to about 950 FPS. I'm using the Lee 175 TC currently in this fashion, but the Mihec has more radiused contours and a wider meplat--elements that enhance feeding and terminal effects.

They feed like buttah in my G23 with Storm Lake barrel. ;)

back when i shot the 10mm relvolvers alot i looked too. Only thing i came up with was magma makes a round nose but i think it was like a 165 grain.

What would it take to modify a Lee 175gr TC mold?? I noticed this mentioned in the thread mentioned in the post above but the guy doing it gave no details. I will post a link below to Veral Simth's company that custom makes molds. I see one of his 10mm molds mentioned with pictures in the above linked thread and Mr. Smith posts on Greybeard's forums. Only problem is $145.00 for a two cavity mold - not at all unreasonable but I have too many projects going right now to invest more than $100. Eventually I believe the popularity of the 10mm/40 S&W revolvers will prompt someone to make one commercially available. Nice thing about the Lee molds is they are cheap enough to modify and if you bugger it up you're not out much ($18.00) for a two cavity mold.

I ma not sure a true RN design in 180gr works in the 10mm. There just isn't enough OAL for them in pistols, maybe a revolver. The 180grTC runs better & the Lyman 175grRNFP works pretty well in the 10mm.

Keep in mind that http://www.accuratemolds.com/ will do about anything you want from what I read around here. Give them a shout.

This is my .40 boolit of choice at the moment. Lyman 401043 AV. Shoots nicely in my Pt 100

I just looked and it would appear that Miha has some available on his website.

I would think that any old machine shop with a Bridgeport could take a flat point .40 cal mold & plunge a ball nose end mill into the cavity to make it into a round nose mold without too much trouble.
