I am looking for a large meplat .44 magnum bullet in the 240-265gr range. I shoot a Smith and don't want to beat is up with the 300+ grain bohemoths.

I can't seem to find any molds out there that fit the bill.

Any suggestions ?

My favorite bullet of all for the .44 Specials AND .44 Magnums is a clone of the H&G #503 as done by Mihec. However, that is a group buy mould. It is now being re-run in both a hollow point and a solid point version:

These moulds represent the finest moulds available ANYWHERE at ANY price and are priced quite reasonably for what you get.

BRP 434640 PB. It weighs in at 267 grains with 50/50 WW-Pb. The GC version weighs 277 grains. Both have a 0.300 meplat and 0.390 nose lengths. They're not listed on my website yet, just the 434640 GC. I recently updated the design and made both PB & GC versions. Here's a look.

Nice looking boolit Bruce, I don't Know about the one large GG.
Could you duplicate it with 2 grooves and do a side by side test?
I am still wrapping my head around the GG's and seem to have lower results with only one large one.

Not to detract from Bruce's molds atall. I've got a couple and like 'em fine. Lyman does make the .44 Devastator mold, and it can be cast as flat nose, or hollow point (if you make a flat point pin for it). The design is similar to Bruce's .260 grainer. Mine casts a 270 grain boolit (I've modified the hollow point pin - less deep), and it is muy accurate.

A 300 grain boolit will not beat up your gun if you use sensible loads. I find the Lee 430-310 VERY accurate in my SRH.

Look at LBT - Veral makes some real nice bullet molds. I have a 260 gr WFN for my 44 and it shoots well. A little more costly but his molds and bullet designs are top shelf.

not much will beat up a Super Redhawk, a 29 is very lightly built in comparison to it.

that's my whole issue with finding a mold for my 629. all you read about is crazy 300 plus grain loads in srh. well that's great but i don't own a srh. i bought the smith because it felt better in my hand. cant shoot something that doesn't feel right. anyways my mind is a spinning. LBT site really makes my head spin although im sure it shouldn't. perhaps if i slowed down and stopped thinking i feel overwhelmed maybe i wouldn't be. that BRP boolit looks great imo. ive looked at the ranchdog that is listed but ive heard its not good to size tl boolits, and i suppose i don't really need a gas check design out of a revolver. so really i have gotten no where in my quest for a mold to fulfill my needs of a whitetail and black bear boolit. black bear being the biggest thing in my neck of the woods.

I found a few other offerings:

43-220V - 250gr, .38" Meplat (88.4%) .365" nose, .665" length
http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-250V-D.png

43-260V - 260gr, .36" Meplat (83.7%) .4" nose, .7" lengthhttp://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-260V-D.png

Ranch Dog TLC432-265-RF
270gr, .312" Meplat (72.6%) .245" nose, .735" length + Gas check
Requres gas check, short nose, .49"bullet inside case will increase pressures.

Compare that to the BRP in post #3
BRP 434640 PB - 265gr(WW), .3" meplat (69.7%) 0.39" nose, .75" Length

I think the BRP is the winner for me. It will be more aerodynamic (more stable at longer ranges) and has 70% meplat which will be very effective...not so much of a flying trashcan full wadcutter design. Nice long nose will help as well.

Babore makes WONDERFUL molds too. We have a few differences of opinion on a couple of boolits but it is between him and me. [smilie=1:
He uses precision and drawings. I plunge the GG cutter into a cherry and say "looks good." :drinks:

My favorite, next to a Lyman 420421. I too have a 629. My first "big bore". I used to shoot "T-Rex killer" loads all the time untill I had to send it back to S&W for repair. Now it only gets low end magnum loads. I use 2 bullets in my 629; Ranchdog's 265 and Lyman 429421, both sized to .430" - .431". You're right about shooting full magnum loads, it get real tiresome after mebbe 40 rounds or so...

There's a bunch of good boolit designs out there....and mould makers that do them right. I'm shooting VAQUEROS at high end 44 special/low end 44 magnum velocity ranges. Your Smith...and wrists...will last a lot longer with 900-to-1000 feet per second loads for 90% of your shooting.

429421 (from Mihec and MMA10MM) 429352 (from Blammer) and the RANCH DOG TLC 432 265/NOE plain base clone are current favorites. 7.5 of UNIQUE or HERCO or HP38 or TITEGROUP all work d*** well.

I did some measuring last night to the 240gr LSWCs that I normally shoot...their meplat is .3". I want to try something bigger than that so I think I'm going to go with the Accurate 43-260V which has a .36" meplat (83.7") and still has a .4" nose and is .7" long and 260gr.

I normally shoot 10.5gr of Unique with 240gr bullets for just over 1200fps out of my 6.5" 686...this is a fairly light .44 load.

I've been an advocate of the Ranch Dog molds since their inception and I can tell you the 432-265GC works well in 444 rifles , 44 MAG rifles , my 4" S&W 629 and my old 1957 vintage Ruger Blackhawk 44 MAG Flattop !

However I am also quite pleased with BRP molds although I've not tried his 434640 I'm sure it would be as good if not better then my old Lyman 429640 mold !

The Lyman 429640 Devestater isn't bad either as I have one of those as well !

You might look into the Saeco #431 which is a 250 grain GC mold that shoots very nicely . I can say the same for the Saeco #432 , this ones a 265 grainer !
