What is an H&R Shikari. My local gun shop has one in 45-70 for $195. It has a ram=rod under the barrel like a muzzle loader. Simple barrel sights and a hooded front sight.

Thanks

Haven't seen one of those since the mid-'70s. They were a break-action single shot based upon the old H&R "Topper" single-barrel shotgun (similar to today's NEF's). The "ramrod" is actually a cleaning rod and is, mostly, a cosmetic touch. Someone must have changed/modified the front sight as my 1975 Gun Digest shows only a straight ramp front with a fixed Marble rear leaf.

They are a cast receiver IIRC. I have had one since they came out, also in 45-70. They shoot very well. I have heard of people having them D&T'd and put a scope on them.

They also made them in 44 mag.

I currently have a 44mag rechambered to 445 SuperMag and have owned 2 in 45-70. They are cast iron recievers so pressures have to be kept down.
My friend ruined an old H&R cast reciever in 30-30 by using a hot load in an old IMR pamplet. I posted about this previously.

The hooded front sight would be a replacement.

These older guns have a very powerful case ejector so beware! It will send a 45-70 case about 10' over your shoulder, if your head doesn't get in the way.

If it is in good shape get it. That is a price that screams buy me. Keep the loads at trapdoor levels and you are good to go.

Just my 2 cents.
I agree with troyboy. At that price you will be lucky if its still there! New price above 275

I have had several during the years, someone always manages to talk me out of them.
the one I currently own, I swaped the receiver out with one from an H&R SB2 frame. Now you can shoot about anything.

$175 i would grab that if it was close

H&R used that same frame for almost all their guns at the time, even the muzzle loaders. I had one in 45-70, one in 22 hornet and the muzzle loader in 58 cal. Have made about two dozen into 54 cal. muzzle loaders using the 209 primer till Idaho changed the law for hunting about 25 years ago.
