Does any one have a picture of a properly beageled mould.I want to try it but I'm not sure of how to cut out the al.tape around the cavity. I was thinking of using an x-acto knife to carefuly cut the boolit form out after the tape is applied. Is this how it is done???

Simply apply a thin strip on each side of the cavity. It does not have to match the boolit profile. You can also adjust how far up the boolit you need to beagle by apply longer strips from the base of the boolit to the ogive. If you only want to increase the driving band you would put a piece on each side of the cavity from the base of the boolit to the end of the driving band.

I use as little as possible. By not completely surounding the cavites and applying close to the outer edge of the mold it also aids in venting the mold.
I run all my bullets thru a sizer so if i have a mold that i am having problems getting good fill out i will add one layer of tape in three locations, four if a 4 cavity or larger, which increses ventilation.I have one mold by a well know builder that throws a very accurate bullet , has small pan type lube groves, that is a pain to cast with without adding tin and all the other tricks of the trade.Once i added the tape my production rate went up and the cull rate when down.
As info only.

I can see it now:

I just sh*theaded my nice Lyman 358477 and it is dropping right at .360 everytime now..

Wouldn't beagling a mould make it drop out of round boolits? I just got a 4 cavity 452460 that drops boolits at .450 so I'm thinking of beagling it, but was concerned that it would drop out of round boolits. I suppose it would be better to have out of round boolits that I can size down to .452 than having nice round boolits at .450 that I can't use!

Your sizer will "round" them. Even better if it sizes nose first.

I don't know what difference it would make, but I think I read somewhere the tape should be on the half with the pins, not the holes.

Does this ring a bell??

It doesn't matter.

just as an experiment, I applied the tape to the OUTSIDE of the mould to make it cast smaller....

it didn't work

just putting it out there

Strange, it worked for me. I took my Mihec 452-200 HP mold and applied 3 layers to the outside of the mold and was able to cast some 55gr .224 boolits for my AR. [smilie=1::veryconfu

So, reverse begling does work.

That means if I put the correct amount of tape on the outside bottom of a 30-170 it should cast a shorter 30-150.

Does boolit experimenting ever cease?

Some of us like to tinker.

Here is a photo of some, .452/500gr pp bullets made with a homemade mold, a rotary cardboard wad cutter for use in the drill press, a lube cutter with a palm rest type pusher for .458's, lube cutter for .454's, and the mold for the blunt nosed .450/420gr paper patch bullet.

Doing/making stuff like this, or stuff like Beagling a mold with set screws, is about being able to do it, and the little bit of pride that comes with doing stuff like that, not necessarily about saving money or making something better.

I made my first lube cutter from a 6" plastic conduit nipple with a brass, pipe too tubing fitting, machined to the correct shape and size using a file and drill press.
